I think many teachers in our building try to connect their content to meaningful and authentic situations; however, do students really see the true value of knowledge even if they do not use it daily? At the very foundation, I think so many students see school as either irrelevant to their life choices or a hurdle to overcome to get where they want to go. 

My opinion is that at the heart of this disconnect in students is a departure from a love of learning. We, as teachers, love learning and most everything about it. The process, the struggle, etc. So how do we communicate that back to our students amidst the flood of voices telling them that so much of school learning (various content) is irrelevant. And I know that, personally, that apathy that comes from students as a response to this attitude is draining for teachers as well. I mean, it is for me. :)

The YouScience Data will be helpful in reaching students on a personal, meaningful level and if we can figure out an intervention that connects YouScience with building a love of learning in general, I really think that may be the sweet spot. I feel as though the aptitude/interest tests can help. The counseling team has a great grasp on the needs of our students and have amazing things planned for them.

Many of our students have difficult situations outside of school, which can make completing seemingly mundane assignments even more trivial. I think the challenge in the classroom is for teachers to think outside the box in our curriculum, but also challenging ourselves to better know our students and their needs. As an ELA teacher, I need to make sure my students are able to write but perhaps I should focus some of their writing skills towards resumes and professional emails. This might help them make a better connection with the curriculum while still working towards mastery of standards.

This disconnect is a difficult one to address. I think if we had College students willing to commit time to hold group meetings to give one on one connections it could be helpful as well as having guidance meetings similar to that of the Jr./Sr. class. Also having a CTAE explanation night/meetings. Some of our students have no idea of what classes to take that would relate to a possible career. Currently teachers try to make life connections with examples and stories. Some classes this is easier than others but all classes do connect to real life. I am able to constantly draw connections from events in the past to how they have impacted our present. I can use news articles and news clips. We can have discussions in class, but I only really grabbed their attention when I can make it relevant to today otherwise they have little interest in learning history. ]]> 2022-03-25 12:25:36 UTC https://padlet.com/renee_carey/iqcjssyt4313jmob/wish/2113695151 https://padlet.com/renee_carey/iqcjssyt4313jmob/wish/2113698479 Classroom relevance is a question that gets posed by both students and families alike, and can be a difficult question to answer.  Sometimes, there is value in challenging the students in new material and assessing their ability to adapt on the fly to different challenges.  This however, is not as accepted today as it was in the past.  With the steady stream of information from social media and online news outlets, students and families are asking the why question to their learning.

I believe it is important to help students understand the why they are learning the material we are covering, and try to relate it to real-life examples. By fostering a love of learning, students will naturally feel okay with being challenged with new materials.
