The British divided this land into North Rhodesia (Zambia) and South Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Northern Rhodesia was a charter colony (Ruled by an English sent charter/s) while Southern Rhodesia was a crown colony (Ruled by a government sent by The Crown from England). During April of 1980, Southern Rhodesia gained independence from British rule and became the country of Zimbabwe. Besides the minerals Rhodesia had, British colonizers were also pleasantly surprised to find out that the land was perfect for agriculture. Today that territory forms the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The first British South African Company Administrator for the western part of Rhodesia was appointed for Barotseland in 1897 and for the entirety of North-Western Rhodesia in 1900. The first BSAC Administrator for the eastern part, North-Eastern Rhodesia, was appointed in 1895. The white people in the territory south of the river paid barely any attention to it though. Things like treaties between the BSAC and the black tribes, acts of parliament between the BSAC and Crown Lands, determining the British colonial authority of both parts of the colony, the rights of the increasing number of British settlers and their descendants were all given secondary review by authorities.
