Some people say Captain Swain is rough and mean. Explain a CONTRADICTING, or opposite, trait that you have seen from his character. Provide text evidence proving this trait.

Tip: If you would like a 4, provide 2 TRAITS with evidence and use complete sentences!

Text Evidence: A man can't shovel coal on an empty stomach or a lad either. Page 15 Chapter 1. Another one is that he is generous. When Captain Swain towed a boat that they found on their way to San Francisco. Text Evidence: Then he raised the speaking tube to his lips and shouted "Glad to help sir! We'll throw you a hawser!"

One contracting character trait is that Captain Swain is warm-hearted. Jack thought Captain Swain would tie him and Praiseworthy up since they were stowaways. But instead, Captain Swain offered them food and let them work off their ticket by shoveling fuel. Also, he showed kindness because he helped the square-rigger by giving it a tow since it's been becalmed for a week. Overall, Captain swain is a very contradicting character.

Captain Swain is not mean because at one point in the book captain swain said, "do you want food?" Captain swain asked that when they were about to put the coal in the furnace. One trait that Captain Swain has is caring because when Praiseworthy and Jack were about to go do work Captain Swain asked them for food which means Captain Swain is caring. The second character trait that Captain Swain has is sincere. Captain Swain is sincere because the other ship asked for help he said we will pull you. By pulling and helping the other ship that showed that Captain Swain is sincere because the other ship was stuck for a week. Captain Swain could be nice at times he should.

I think that Captain Swain is generous. Sometimes he can be a little mean but, he is generous. My proof is when he wanted to lock up Jack and Praiseworthy they told him they were hungry. Usually when someone asks that to someone who is mad at them they would usually say no , but this time the Captain was generous enough because he didn't want them in the boiling room with coal on an empty stomach. Who would? Another contradiction that Swain has is he is very thoughtful. When another boat saw the Lady Wilma they asked for help and Captain said " Glad to help, sir." He is very thoughtful to do that because helping one another is a very nice and kind thing to do. If I was Jack I would a little thankful to have a captain like that because if you met someone who would just treat you horribly and not give something to eat, "WOOOWEEE" I would be sorry for myself. But, I had Praiseworthy by my side so I might've been just fine.

Captain Swain's character trait is that he is generous. Because, on chapter 3 page 35 when the other Captain of the ship said " can you give us a tow captain?" Captain Swain said "glad to help, sir! We'll throw you a hawser". This means that Captain Swain is very generous to others and cares about every person. Also, another trait about Captain Swain is that he is very kind. Because, on chapter 1 page 14 Jack predicted that now the Captain knows that they were stowaways he would chain them of force them to walk on the plank but instead he made them work in the coal bunker and also he let them have foods.

I knew that when he said that he will allow Jack and Praiseworthy to eat and stay in the ship, if they work for him by digging the coal dust in pg.15. He usually make stowaways walk the plank tied in the chains. So Jact's worthk was afraid.
Also, I think that the Captain Swain cares about others. I knew that when the Captain Swain said, "By grabs, It's worth a try."

Something contradicting that I have found with the captain of Lady Wilma is that at times he can be merciful. One example of this is when didn't tie them up and make them walk the plank like he said he would when he would find those stowaways. Captain Swain actually fed Jack and Praiseworthy. Another time he contradicted his stereotypical personality is when he towed the other ship. This is an act of careness. When we had first introduced this character, he was so destined to beat this other ship "Sea Raven" also going to California. When the other boat asked for a tow he actually debated with himself wether or not to tow the boat and he knew that if he would it would slow him down in the race. First of all, him just thinking about it is a very large contradiction of when we first met him. The fact that he gave them the tow is another contradiction.
