He played the cornet, a type of instrument close to a trumpet, and sung too. He brought about a completely new era of jazz in the 1920's.  This era was known as swing jazz.  He was also known as the first big "Super Star."   One thing he came up with to further jazz was the extended solo, before Armstrong there was no such thing. He changed the way people played music and how they viewed African American jazz players.  He tried to include feeling inside of his music.  He traveled all over and performed for people to show them the importance of music in their lives.
