The radio is now able to be listened to on various different plaforms: online, in cars, and on smartphones. Audiences may grow due to the wider reach radio has as well as the easier accesibility. Moreover, the Internet allows radio audiences to engage with the radio by various ways of communication: call-ins, tweets, emails, comments on facebook/twitter, twitter polls.

What is the competition that BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show has and how are they responding to this?

BBC Radio 1 BS: 9697 listeners, 18% average hours listened

BBC Radio 2: 15,357 listeners, 28% average hours listened

Radio 4: 11,656 listeners, 21% average hours listened

BBC Radio 1's audience is lacking compared to its competetion. This is because of the content each station provides and its target audience. Radio 4, for example, includes news, history and science that appeals to older or elderly audiences, whereas Radio 1 contains more popular culture aspects and celebrity gossip in which appeal to a younger adience more. However, because younger people do not often listen to the radio, its listening figures are low compared to Radio 4's older audience who many have a habit of listening to the radio from their childhood and growing up.

The remit of Radio 1 is 'to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech.'

Its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers and should offer a range of new music, support emerging artists - especially those from the UK - and provide a platform for live music. News, documentaries and advice campaigns should cover areas of relevance to young adults.

This is maintained by the shows host, Nick Grimshaw, who took over the show in 2012 when the Internet was kicking off for the youth. His personality and young age brought in to lower the age of the target audience.
