The quote, "Your brain against mine. Woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess!" (pg. 29), explains that General Zaroff thinks of their chase as a game, putting one another's strengths, minds, and, especially, weapons against each other to the death.
Another quote, "...but he saw the general's right hand held something metallic-- a small automatic pistol." (pg. 31), shows that Rainsford was suprised and noticed Zaroff's pistol while he was hiding in the tree in the hunt.

Symbol Explanation

The symbol describes General Zaroff's cockiness and confidence in his hunting skills. The small size of this pistol shows that he is extremely confident since he used a weapon that requires aim and precision. It is introduced by Zaroff when he was talking about hunting to Rainsford. It is also shown when Zaroff was hunting for Rainsford while Rainsford was in the tree, hiding.
The symbol is developing Zaroff's cockiness when Zaroff was hunting Rainsford and he could've used his pistol to hunt him, but decides not to even use it. This shows his confidence and his blindness to reality is gradually developing. The symbol is concluded when Zaroff is killed and the pistol is never used to kill Rainsford. His self-confidence symbolized in the pistol is put to an end as he died.
