Both students enjoy group work and working with their peers. Providing opportunities in class for students to engage with each other can promote their language use and expose them to other students using English. There is a lot of switching between "academic language" and "nonacademic language" that happens in  class, and EL students can begin to pick up on these subtleties as they interact with native English speakers. I have noticed that many of my students are not confident in their abilities to read or write, but they are eager to talk to each other. During class, students are engaging with the teacher mostly through whole-class discussion. Students are expected to raise their hands and contribute their knowledge of a science phenomenon. The content is accessible to all students because all students have existing knowledge of biology (they just might not have the exact science terms to describe it). The science teacher encouraged students to work with their math partner to figure out math problems before attempting a problem on their own. I liked that students were able to build confidence in the math concept before they were expected to attempt problems on their own.
