World War II was the biggest and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries. Sparked by the 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland, the war dragged on for six bloody years until the Allies defeated the Axis powers of Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy in 1945.

The war also caused widespread destruction of buildings, homes, schools, and hospitals. Many people were left homeless, and countries faced the huge task of rebuilding from the ground up, needing international help to restore basic services.

The emotional impact of the war was significant. Survivors often suffered severe trauma, and even their children grew up with fears and anxieties passed down from their parents. Emotional support and mental health care were needed long after the war ended.
