The Mvelo desk is said to have derived from the demanding work schedule and time people spend sitting at their desks (Mvelo, 2016). The desk is unique in both physical design and interpretation. The diamonds and triangles represent both feminism and masculinity and together they are meant to form a union. Ultimately the union represents both the married couple as well as the “marriage” people have with their work (Mvelo,2016).

I am fond of this creation because it appears Western from far, but once the detail is noticed it is evident that African design engulfs the entirety of the design. The symbolism behind the design creates a personal impact and creates a deeper connection with the consumer. Because it is just symbols it can be open to interpretation and could be given a meaning of its own by anyone consuming the product.

Nicholas arendse

The chair itself is a beautiful piece of art. It brings together both functionality and beauty. The homestead representation with regards to layout adds more depth and value to the chair. It creates a link between tradition and mainstream culture – combining the two to show that cultural aspects can be translated in more ways than traditional objects and structures.

Dimeji Afrowaste is a Nigerian designer who transforms discarded clothes into unique designs. The designs blend different materials together to produce garments that range from different materials, but are one. His designs see patterns and bright mixed colors, which resemble the patterns and similarly the colors used in many African designs. “This colourful, playful blending of cultures and eras, illustrates the potential for beauty in the forgotten and discarded.” (Omotayo, et al., 2021).He has further embraced the old-and-new by designing a shirt that fits todays era alongside a pants that can be seen as somewhat more traditional. This blend shows that African design can be immersed and found in many parts of the world and we might not necessarily know it yet.

Nicholas Arendse
