Common threats of folk culture derive mainly from popular culture and their customs and habits. The difusion of popular culture from MDC's can lead to dominace of Western perspectives. Some common threats include loss of traditional values, change in traditional role of women, change of clothing, and the threat of foreign media imperialism. Example of this would be instead of wearing chador, which is common tradition in Middle Eastern countries, they decide to wear skirts and blouses. Along with values of one's culture the environment is also a common threat of folk culture. Often times popular culture causes pollution in the enviroment and they may even take land for their own use that may belong to folk culural groups.

Popular cultures modify or control the environment, rather then let the environment control what and how that culture lives. Popular culture is diffused much quicker than folk culture, and appears more uniform. The reason for the uniformity and quicker diffusion is because of the technology used. For example, fast food chains are a part of popular culture. These chains are created and organized in franchises, which are a company's agreement with business people in a local area to market and sell that certain product or food. The company then expands worldwide. The only downside to this uniformity without consideration to the environment is pollution. All of these customs have a demand to use natural resources, such as minerals, oils, and even animals. Eventually, the animal will become extinct or the minerals will run out. This can cause a major problem, because the environment cannot keep up with the demand, causing a mass shortage.

The global economy and culture leads to an increasingly uniform popular culture because the spatial expression of a popular custom in one location will be similar to another. People who promote popular culture want to portray a uniform landscape. They do this because it allows for product recognition. Popular culture is based more on uniformity rather than uniqueness. An example of a particular food chain would be Chick Fil A. Whether your in California or South Carolina, Chick Fil A will still be the same. An example of a gas station is the layout of service K gas stations. It can always be easily recognized by it bright red K. An example for sports teams is that all football stadiums have concessions where food vendors sell their product. Also, almost all have a special entrance for the home team to enter through at the beginning of the game. Most sports teams have more masculine colors and mascots, especially in football, because these sports appeal more to men than women. An example for dance clubs would be that all of the same types of dance clubs wear the same thing. An example for churches is that each denomination as there own set of values that each church in that denomination follow. For example, most Catholic churches they have an alter in the front and pews behind and on the sides of the altar.
