For example, when we purchased the Louisiana Territory, any Native Americans or people who weren't American settlers were pushed off of the land that they had already been on for generations. Another reason is the Mexican-American War itself. While it was 827,000 square miles and doubled the size of the U.S., it still put us in debt. In addition to gaining debt, we forced thousands and thousands of Native Americans out of the Louisiana Territory and relocated elsewhere. Many of them died along the journey because they faced hunger and disease. One main reason it started was because Zachary Taylor lead an army into the disputed area of where the Texas boundary was and fought some of Mexico's soldiers. Another reason was because of the disputed area and the fact that the U.S. wanted more land, so they said its boundary was the Rio Grande to try to get more land. Even though we won, we were the ones who declared war. This was known as the Gadsen Purchase and it was only 30,000 square miles. So if we purchased the Louisiana Territory for $15 million and got 827,000 square miles then for only 30,000 square miles, it should have been significantly less than $10 million. Once America had purchased this land and settlers started to move in, we didn't treat anything right in this area. For example, settlers would take away land from the Native Americans and original settlers who had already been there. In addition to this, settlers would disrespect holy places and the land laws were changed completely. We were also the ones who went to this area to buy more land. This purchase also added to our huge debt that still wasn't paid off.
