Well, first thing is first. My name is very common, not to mention that my last name is too. Maybe a middle name would have made me more unique but in my case, I think my mom didn’t like me. I have 2 older and 2 younger siblings whom all have middle names, I, the middle child, was the odd one out. So when my mom was pregnant they couldn’t figure out my gender, so my family didn’t know what to name me. My brothers were huge fans of power rangers so they told my mom if I was a boy to name me, Jason, Zack, Billy and Tommy and if I was a girl they wanted me to be named Kimberly or Trini. My last name, Hernandez, has so much meaning to me than anyone would ever know. This down here is the person who picked me up when I was 2 years old and has cared for me ever since. I have never in my life met such a nurturing human being than this man right here. I am so proud that I get to call him my Father!

One of my favorite characteristics of myself is my fun personality and my sociability. I try to be an energetic and enthusiastic person everyday. Ever since one of my brother's passed away I told myself that I would always live every single one of my days to the fullest. This has helped me become a positive person in life and to the people that surround me. This also makes me very sociable, I love to talk and meet new people everywhere. I am not afraid to speak my mind out and make new friends. I can get along with everybody that I meet and I have never met a person that has disliked me for who I am. HAHA.

I know that recently there has been many incidents about hispanic families being separated because of deportation. One thing that I am thankful for is for having my family here with me and supporting me throughout my journey. I am privileged to have my a father and mother that can provide me with everything I need to continue in my career and life. They take care of me and help me with anything that I need. It was very hard to see my family in California and then have to leave them. You really never know what you have until it is gone and I have had to learn that from first hand experience. I learned never to take my family for granted and cherish every moment we have together.

This object in this picture does so much more than give me warmth. This blanket carries many emotions and sentiments that I have towards my grandma and my mother. This blanket was given to me when I was still in my mother's belly at her baby shower. My grandma was the person to give this blanket to my grandma and up until this day this blanket still lives. This blanket sleeps with me everyday and when I do not have it I feel like something is missing. This blanket represents the unity between my mom and my grandma, as they raised me alone for the first two years of my life.

As of now I don't really have any cultural biases but if there is one that I could think of it was that Indian people own all cleaners. I always saw Indian people when I would go pick up clothes from the Cleaners when my mom would send me. Maybe it was because I only knew about 3 different places where my mom would take clothes. Obviously, they are not the only people who own them. When I lived in California it was Asians who owned most.

One of my favorite literacy experiences was being able to mentor my brother through his literacy change. At one point this year my little brother was doing very poorly in his reading class. We even found out he had not been turning in his reading log for about 3 weeks. After this I was able to speak to my little brother and lecture him about how important it was for him to be reading and staying up with his daily reading. I did not expect his change to be from one day to another but that is exactly what it seemed like happened. He began to double up on his reading. Almost every time I saw him he was reading a book and asking questions from curiosity. His teacher even sent us notes about how his attitude had changed in the class and how she noticed that he saw he actually cared about learning.

One of my discomforts being a Mexican-American, is not being able to blend in with the Americanized culture. Because I was raised in a Mexican household many of my customs, traditions and food is Mexican. So when I hear some of my friends speaking about different things they do with their families and different types of food they have eaten I usually stay quiet. Much of what I know is in Spanish and do not know what it is called in English, so I never know how to explain something properly. In this picture I am showing my culture in an occasion where my mom is heating up tortillas, corn and meat.

One thing that I am concerned as I am getting closer to having my own classroom is to be able to set a culturally relevant environment in my classroom. This semester we have learned a lot about being culturally relevant and making your students feel welcome and valued into your classroom. Honestly, this sounds awesome but I am worried about how well I will be able to execute this in my classroom. Student teaching has showed how busy it is to be an elementary school educator and I my worry is that I will forget many things and concepts I have learned throughout the semester because I have to put my focus on other things.

I would say one of my everyday literacy practice would be speaking and texting to my colleagues at work and school. Every night I will have some sort of communication with my coworkers at work, my colleagues at school or even when I am alone. This interaction can involve either texting, dialogue, email, sending videos and even listening to music. With this I am able to learn new words and accents that people speak around me. I am also able to appreciate them and their cultural that identifies them of who they are. This is very eye opening for me and gives me a different perspective of things.

I was introduced to so many new books that I could use for my students, all with different strategies so I could use the books as my mentor texts. In addition, I was also able to read The Day the Crayons Quit, Pete the Cat, If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Recess Queen, etc. These are just some of many books that I will be able to use in my classroom for my students to read and for me to use during instructional time.

This is a picture of my little sister's Quinceanera last year during June. This is one of many traditions and values that we have in our culture. I would say this is probably one of the most important ones that I have seen during the years. I am very thankful that my parents were able to give my sister and I the opportunity to celebrate our 15 years of age. If I am ever to have a daughter, I hope to grant her the same wish as my parents were able to do so. Also, on this day, family from different states come and it is very awesome to see all of us together. The most important artifact we get is from our grandma, she has given all her grand daughters their Quinceanera rings on their special day.

Although I am concerned of being able to create a culturally relevant environment, I do believe that one of my strengths is being Hispanic. Being from a different culture other than the dominant one in United States has opened my perspective in different situations and in being more appreciative of what I have. This has also taught me how it feels to be a minority in this country and how some of my students will be minorities too. From my experiences, I am able to actually put myself into my students' shoes and understand how they might feel amongst their classmates.
