George Orwell’s aimed to warn everyone about the dangers of talitarianism. 1984 is a political novel written with the purpose of warning readers in the West of the dangers of totalitarian government. In the last couple pages of the afterword it states “ Orwell like other authors of the other negative utopias is not a prophet of disaster. He wants to warn and awaken us. He still hopes-but in contrast to the writers of the utopias in the earlier phases of western society, his hope is a desperate one. The hope can be realized only by recognizing, so 1984 teaches us, the danger with which all men are confronted today, the danger of a society of automatons who will have lost every trace of individuality, of love, of critical thought, and yet who will not be aware of it because of “doublethink”(Erich Fromm). The novel embraces the loss of personal identity while demonstrating how to effectively get rid a person’s independence, particularly through extensive sexual repression and the prohibition of individual thought. - Almendra

In this part of the book, O’Brien is in the Ministry of Love treating Winston. Due to the fact that Winston was especially hateful towards the party, O’Brien had to use stronger methods to control him. In one of the sessions, O’Brien tells Winston, “The rule of the party is forever”, (262). Tauntingly, Winston answered by saying that that was because the party cared for all of its comrades. Once he was called stupid and shocked with pain, O’Brien replied and said the following, “The Party seeks power for its own sake... One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution, one makes a revolution in order to establish a dictatorship” (263). Consequently, I believe that the purpose for this part of the passage is to tell the reader how the party is so powerhungry. Yet in the end, they won. What is also interesting is the way that phrases can be reversed, as shown in this quote. The quote shows how the party’s own history played out. First they started a revolution to take change, instead of having the capitalist win, Big Brother did. Although in the past we have learned that revolutions were for freedom, the party used them for slavery. All of which ties back to the three main mantras of the party. Therefore, the party is immaculate because of its opposing strategies.
-Sarah Ramos

In this particular part in the novel, Winston is interrogated by O’Brien in the Ministry of Love. Page 263 explains, “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness, only power, pure power.. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing.. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives..” In my perspective, I believe that George Orwell added the comparison of the German Nazis and Russian Communists to demonstrate how similar these countries came to becoming totalitarian governments; as the Communists wanted to spread their ideologies, and the Nazis wanting to conquer further into Europe. However, O’Brien explains that none had come to recognize their motives. This signifies that the Party’s motive is to obtain absolute control, and is well aware of its own extensive control and power. Orwell had written this novel in the late 1940s, World War II had just ended, and the Cold War had begun. Additionally, I believe that Orwell wrote this particular part of the novel to compare these real world conflicts to Big Brother, ultimately becoming a forewarning of what society would be like and the consequences followed if these totalitarian like countries rose to power.
-Lesly Flores

The book overall was intriguing and pulled at my emotions. I love how Orwell’s warning about totalitarian regime caused him to right such an impactful book. The characters were very important to the plot and how it grew throughout the book. The ending was my favorite as it was unexpected by seemingly many people. The ending showed how powerful the party really is and that itself added to to the Orwell had in mind. If someone were to write a book warning society about something, then the ending shouldn’t have been a happy one, as it defeats the whole purpose for writing the book. Winston’s character development took me by surprise. At first, he was pushing the parties limits, like writing “down with big brother” in the diary, but slowly as the story progresses you can see the party growing weaker and eventually, that power becomes too much and Winston falls. He finally gave in into loving big brother and that showed how invincible the party is, which added to Orwell’s warning. In the afterword, Erich fromm states “George Orwell’s 1984 is the expression of a mood and it is a warning. The mood it expresses is that of near despair about the future of man, and the warning is that unless the course of history changes, men all around the world will lose their most human qualities.” It was genius how Orwell created a dystopian society and made characters come to life with words, and behind those words and those characters, a warning can be heard.-karen espinoza

Also, because Big Brother uses mind control over their own citizens including Winston. For example at the end of the story it said everything is fine nothing to worry about I love big brother said Winston when he never did. According to the book, “tell me, Winston- and remember, no lies; you know that I am able to detect a lie- tell me, what are your true feelings toward Big Brother? I hate him. “You hate him. Good. Then the time has come for you to take the last step. You must love Big Brother. If we ever do then the consequences would be a result of the type of society like Oceania. Orwell intentionally put both sides of the problem that Oceania has been facing. If the totalitarian regime is either good or bad. On Winston’s views he thought the totalitarian regime was bad and through Big Brother’s eyes it is I thing that society needs to survive. At the end of the book the Party has once again defeated their opponent, Winston, who by the greatest power of the Party has been brainwashed into totally contradicting his believes about the Party.

Christopher

I believe that in this part of the novel, Orwell wanted to show how Winston actually knows how people understand things at that time. An example is, "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past" (248), this quote can be broken into two parts. If you controlled the past you can shape the future with what you know from the past, an example from "1984" is when Winston had all these memories from the past and he would try to use them in them throughout the novel. If you control the present, you are able to control the past because nobody will be in control, you will be able to present the past through your point of view, an example, the whole book Orwell published this book in 1949 and wrote the book about 1984, he used what he knew. - Maria Barraza

In this novel, Oceania was controlled by the party and Big Brother. Every citizen have been manipulated and brainwash by the party. They are forced to believe and do everything the party says. According in page 298 and 299 "Mean while it gained ground steadily, all party members tending to use newspeak words and grammatical constructions more and more in their everyday speech. The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world view and mental habits proper to the devotes of Igsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible." Based on this evidence, one can infer that the party can use Newspeak to control peoples thoughts and actions.
-Elizabeth

The purpose of George Orwell as to writing certain parts in the book 1984 is t explain and warn us about certain topics. Throughout the book Orwell created a character which was named Winston Smith. Winston was like the protagonist of the book and was the true rebel who wanted to defeat big brother and their totalitarian government. As the book goes on towards the end Winston realizes that the government has too much power and can control mostly anyone both physically and mentally. According to the book, “The Party seeks Power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power” (pg. 263). Big Brother’s power is limitless and thus being the reason why Orwell wrote 1984. Orwell wrote this part of 1984 to warn people and society in the future about the dangers power can have.

-Anahi Rojas

1984 by George Orwell was an amazing book to warn us about the danger of technology and how we will soon be under it’s control (or slaves to it). One reason why we will soon be under the control of technology is that we are becoming addicted to it, improving it day by day, and making sure that it gets smarter every time we improve it. In 1984 it states that “Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safer; thought, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing. A kilometer away the Ministry of Truth, his place of work, towered vast and white above the grimy landscape”(Page 3, Paragraph 2). In 1984 the telescreens are used to spy on people and to control them physically, but Winston knows that even if he turns his back on the telescreen, his back can still reveal everything. It shows that the telescreens are controlling Oceania citizens physically, the technology now is also physically controlling us because social media is telling us what the new trends are and many people will follow those trends and so it is controlling what the person will wear (fashion trends).— Bianca

The purpose of George Orwell writing 1984 was to show how technology can be dangerous to societies and communities. The technology used in 1984 gave confusing information out to people in Oceania. Their propaganda technique in 1984 was the telescreens. The telescreens are an example that technology can have a bad impact on any society. I believe the purpose of the telescreens was to show how technology can change societies and impact people’s lives. The telescreens are a type of technology that gives out confusing information and get into people’s heads. This ties into society today because the social media and technology today by people getting tied into technology. People today and in 1984 are becoming slaves to technology and following technology and now everything is getting into people’s minds. This can tie into how dangerous it can be for the government to have too much power. The government in Oceania had too much power and technology took over people’s minds and they kind of became attached to technology.

The purpose of 1984 is to warn you of the dangers of totalitarian regime and how it can be a dangerous way of government. George Orwell probably wrote it to warn us that in the future this form of government can take over, brainwash, and control the people. For example the government can be so powerful that as much as you try you won’t get past the powerful government. As shown in 1984 when they were torturing Winston they went as far as using rats. They knew his worst fears and what he loved. Big brother used the telescreens to get this information and also from the people that turned him in. Eventually they made him love big brother and hate Julia.

The purpose of the book was to inform us about totalitarian regime. The statement “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING” to me means that the actions of the people who live in Oceania are being observed by the government. On page number 1 it says “on each Landing, opposite the lift shaft, the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that that eyes would followed you about when you move. Big Brother is Watching you, the caption beneath it ran.” This statement is a totalitarian regime because the government is controlling the people with the telescreen. As said in page 3 “The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously”. I think that the central idea is to warn the danger of totalitarianism causes in society. Overall I think that the theme of the book “1984” is to warn us about totalitarian regime. — Emaly C.

George Orwell’s ‘1984’ was an emotional roller coaster. The novel he wrote was trying to alert the nation about the totalitarian regime and about the manipulation that could happen if people were not to express themselves.

Orwell was a Socialist and strongly believed in the future of rebellion to advance society, yet so often he saw such rebellions go wrong and develop into totalitarian rule. Particularly, Orwell saw such growths during his time in Spain and in Russia, where he saw the advancement of communism and the obliteration of civil liberties, honest government, and economic power. I really truly think that this novel is moving, because it reveals that you must try to break any form of manipulation or constriction you are receiving. As Winston, a character in the novel, proved by writing “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER”, falling in love with Julia, and rebelling against the Party. He was trying to rebel, meaning he was trying to grasp that little handful of his life he had left. He didn’t know anything else except that the Party was a powerful organization, that he worked for them. When he started thinking he could escape the manipulation and chaos, he was captured. Captured, with the love of his life, Julia. He was then sent to the place where he would be tortured until he was loyal to the Party as before. A little scenario in the novel towards the end, O’Brien, another character, is holding Winston captive and using Winston’s worst fears to manipulate him. He brought out a cage with rats and strapped it onto Winston’s head. Therefore, Winston screams “Do it to Julia! Not me!”. He meant it as well, he meant it when he said they should do it to Julia in fear of thinking he was going to get his face eaten by rats. Instead however, it was ironic as he was going to get his face eaten by rats. Thinking that if he shouted that they should do it to Julia he wouldn’t get his face eaten by rats. Afterwards, in fear of that scenario happening again, he caved and felt mass devotion towards the Party. That was until he met Julia again, he realized he was still in love, but there was no place for love in this world. So I feel the purpose was that Orwell was explaining that there is no place for expression in such a corrupt governmental system. As it states in the novel, “George Orwell’s 1984 is the expression of a mood, and it is a warning. The mood it expresses is that of near despair about the future of a man, and the warning is unless the course of history changes, men all over the world will lose their most human qualities, will become soulless automatons, and will not even be aware of it.”[1984,Afterword, pg. 1]. Concluding, there is no place for individuality in a place that is forcing you to become devoted to a controlling brotherhood that strips you of any expression you even have.
