If you define it as a leadership style that causes change in individuals and social systems, the most iconic figure in recent times may be Nelson Mandela. He helped to transform South Africa from its colonial past and implemented a multi-racial and more equal participatory government.

He was an ideal role model and "walked the talk”. In his case, people saw in him the leader they wanted to be and because of that charism they believed and trusted him. He inspired his followers easily and with clarity. He encouraged his followers to challenge the status quo. He transcended his own personal interest for the interest and well-being of the many.

A transformational leader has the ability to positively influence others, has the skills to teach and motivate action, makes decisions with confidence, visualizes the future in the medium and long term because he knows that big changes take time, works with the team and interacts individually with everyone and recognizes the work that his team does. The transformational leader has a great capacity to promote change, leads by example and is an inspiration within the team to improve.
Transformational leaders accept that leadership does not depend on the hierarchy, accept that it can be exercised horizontally and democratically by others in the team depending on the situation, and are capable of creating motivating and stimulating environments.

An example of a transformational leader is Harvey Milk, who made history by becoming the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States in 1977: the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. A year later, Milk, whose political career was an extension of his activism in favor of the rights of the LGTBI community, was assassinated. Before dying, Harvey Milk, aware of the threats he was receiving against his life, recorded a posthumous speech in which he said "if a bullet enters my brain, hopefully it will destroy the doors of all closets.

A transformational leader is one who has brought about a paradigm shift in results for people and communities. The late Kofi Annan, the form UN Secretary General in 2002 mobilized the world to set up the Global Fund for HIV/TB/Malaria which has saved over 50 million lives over the past 20 years and transformed individuals, households and countries for the better. Leaders grows or impact other leaders and this is demonstrated by President George Bush (Jnr) who also set up PEPFAR one year after the Global Fund and after 20 years has also saved 25 million lives and significantly strengthening health systems and improving on maternal health and wellbeing.

Kofi Annan from a humble beginning has seen the disastrous impact of AIDS on a vibrant labor force and economic development of especially low and middle income countries in sub Saharan Africa. He clearly understood the inequalities in access to antiretroviral drugs which was present in the global north and virtually non-existent in the global south. This was his call to action to challenge world leaders to live up to the tenets of the UN Charter focusing on promoting, protecting and fulfilling the human rights for all. The right to life was critical regardless of whether you were born in the global north or south.

Upon becoming President of post apartheid South Africa, he did not show vengeance but rather continued to be an inspiration for those who are left behind. He was charismatic, communicated with impact, very respected, and very popular but opted to lead for just one term of five years and step aside. He was therefore exemplary.

I agree with colleagues and their reflections, so wont want to repeat what I read in the great postings of Alberto and Richard. One of my big concerns, but also an opportunity for transformational leadership will be, setting an example for working towards and celebrating the leaders who work for the UN values and goals beyond the siloes of one UN entity. UN leaders, and by this I mean from EXD to any staff can be a transformational leader if they look beyond their agencies' own territory. We could achieve so much.

A transformational leader is also credible and a model and norms based and principled leader who applies human rights approach, gender equality, women empowerment and leave no one behind in his or her leadership style. Thomas Sankara, the formal Head of State of Burkina Faso was a transformational leader. He shown integrity and fight against corruption and promoted the justice for all. He applied the principle of leave no one behind and put the protection of the environment and climate change at the heart of its priorities.

Last year I was introduced to an inspirational transformative leader here in India. She established an NGO for the trans female and trans male community - so immediately inclusive of a group often neglected and unrepresented being trans male. Her leadership so represents the word transformational because the NGO has been structured and built in a way that the current board and leadership are mandated to progressively hand over control to the next generation of leaders through a time bound relationship and capacity development programme. True leadership and an understanding of how the organisation is a process of development and so to the engagement of the individual.

It is a leaders who inspires others to innovate and create a positive change that will positively impact all. An example of a transformation leader was the director of an NGO that I worked with many years ago. The leader was a woman who together with two other women founded an NGO to reach poor and vulnerable women with basic health and reproductive services in the 1970s when it was not widely available outside of the big cities. It was during a time where it was not culturally acceptable to provide contraceptives to women. The director's leadership inspired several health providers to join her NGO and from one clinic, it grew to 27 across the country. She pushed for changes and women's right to sexual and reproductive services free of stigma and discrimination when the public health system would not.
