Proactive, versus reactive, problem solving focuses on starting the problem solving process prior to a crisis. Anticipating situations allows one to identify triggers and create strategies to help prior to crisis occurring. An example of proactive problem solving is creating a school-wide positive behavior support system, determining class rosters based on necessary support and students' needs, and creating visuals for students to use on the first day of school, prior to waiting for them have a meltdown and need them.

Response to Intervention is a specific, technical type of problem solving. Data is taken and analyzed in order to create intervention to meet a student's academic and behavior needs in the classroom. Often the RTI process is reactive as it begins when there is evidence of a gap. As a group members of the RTI (often called SIT) team create interventions and analyze the effectiveness of the interventions to determine if they are meeting the student's needs using data.
