Réunion: France in the Indian Ocean

Réunion is an overseas department on France that is located approx. 340 miles east of Madagascar. Because of its isolation from metropolitan France, Réunion's culture is distinct and unique. Réunionese culture is a blend of European, African, Indian, and Chinese traditions. Always accompanied by rice, the most common dishes are curry. A flight from Paris to Réunion is actually the 2nd longest domestic flight in the world. Réunion has become so notorious for shark attacks, swimming and surfing is banned. There have been more than 50 attacks recorded between 1988 to 2016. Réunion is a volcanic island covered in large craters. Villages can be found inside these craters. Inside, the climate changes completely from the coastal areas with rocky scrub giving way to lush rainforest with spectacular waterfalls. Réunion past is not so pretty. During much of the the 18th and 19th centuries, French colonization, supplemented by the arrival of Africans, Chinese and Indians as workers, gave way to the ethnic diversity seen in today's population. Starting in 1690, most of the non-Europeans on the island were enslaved. The colony finally abolished slavery in 1848.

https://www.9news.com.au/world/reunion-island-the-island-thats-had-so-many-shark-attacks-swimming-is-now-banned/1b6d83a0-87b1-4883-8054-f122fff6df75

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9union

Bordeaux: Wine Capital of the World

Americans associate the French with many things both good and bad. One of those stereotypes is that they are wine lovers. In fact, France is the third largest producer of wine in the world! Not only does France consume and produce a lot, they are home to many of the most prestigious wines in the world. More specifically, Bordeaux is commonly called the wine capital of the world. Wine has been produced in this region since the mid-1st century and has been growing grapes continuously ever since. Today, vineyards cover more than 120,000 hectares and are home to over 8,500 producers. One of the reasons wine making is so successful in Bordeaux is due to the optimal environment for growing vines. The climate, access to irrigation, and soil composition is ideal for the vines. The city, too, is world class. As the largest UNESCO World Heritage City in the world, Bordeaux is home to the Port of the Moon district. Beyond that, Bordeaux has over 350 historic monuments, second to Paris in total.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bordeaux

https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1256/
