For example, if the topic is going to be about World War 2, perhaps a student had a great grandfather who was a soldier and there are stories that can be passed down and shared. This style of integration can be broadened to a number of topics, not just history.

As an educator who wants all of their students to be successful and feel as if they are in a classroom that they belong in, I need to have my students interact with each other in a way that promotes learning from one another. I would like for them to work in groups, and learn from each other to see what makes each of their cultures unique, and my hope with this is that they can ultimately become worldly students and later adults.

Learning About My Students.

Taking time and really learning about my students is another way that I plan on becoming more culturally aware. I want to get to know my students, their families, their communities, and ultimately their backgrounds. I feel that by going out and forcing myself to gain this knowledge, I can then transfer it into the classroom.

This is a wonderful way for parents or guardians to really get a glimpse at the type of classroom that I am trying to build, as well as offer them a chance to speak about their culture, beliefs, religion, etc.

I like the idea of offering the students an opportunity to decorate their space, or a community space like a wall. My goal for this is to show them that all of the cultures can come together and create something beautiful, and that there is more than enough space for everyone to be comfortable.

Work On Providing My Students with a Model Example.

I think that teachers have the opportunity to really make an impact on the lives of their students. And there is no way to make a difference or significant impact on the students than by becoming the model teacher that they deserve. I want to show them that yes, I am different from them, but we are all valuable and equal. I want them to know that I understand them and want nothing more than for them to succeed.

CBI, Community Based Instruction.

One of the best ways for students to learn about their local communities is to get out and see what it is really like. This is where CBI comes in. Taking the students out to do learning activities outside of the classroom is something I think will give them a sense of appreciation for where they live, and the people they might encounter at some point. This is best done in contained environment like a grocery store, where they can learn real life experiences and gain practical knowledge.

Building a Trusting Relationship with the Students.

Creating an environment of trust between myself and the students will be paramount to my goal of creating a safe environment for all. If I have the trust of my students, I can then continue to change or modify the expectations of the students to ensure full cooperation and still be able to provide the ideal learning environment.

Make Mistakes a Learning Experience.

I feel that students, especially younger students, should not be punished for a simple mistake or misunderstanding. Instead, I plan on making sure that they learn from their misstep and will take that lesson with them into the future and hopefully become a wiser, more open-minded individual who can grow and thrive.
