Empathy by Heather Lambright

Empathy is the experience of understanding another person's thoughts, feelings, and condition from their point of view, rather than from your own.

What are some examples of daily tasks that may come easily for you but not for someone with an intellectual or physical disability? How can you show empathy to someone that may be different than you?

I feel it would be very difficult to do ordinary things for people like Melody. How I could show empathy for people with disabilities is by treating them normally. I would do that by looking for their potential. Most of the time, people with disabilities are much smarter than us and just aren’t recognized for it. The doctor who Melody’s mom took her to see acted like Melody had no thoughts or feelings but it was just that she couldn’t express them using words.

You can show empathy by helping them and even just saying hi, in out of my mind, melody said that she wished they would say hi. So even if they can’t respond it can make them happy. Also, people who can’t walk but can talk might wish they could play, you could try to include them in some way. Like Zach said, you can be there friend because they might not be able to. Basically, don’t just ignore them they have feelings to.

Talking or walking may come easy for me, but there are people out there who are challenged by saying a single word. I could show empathy to them by smiling and saying hi because they may be able to understand even if they couldn’t respond. It would make them feel good because most kids look away or plug their ears because they think the special needs kids can’t understand them, but sometimes they can. They deserve to be treated like people just like we are. We are NOT superior to them and they are NOT inferior to us. They are not any less bright than us either.

Normal people can do a lot of things, since they have the control over their bodies and minds. However, some people are different. Some people can be born with mental or physical disabilities, which can make it hard to do some things that are included in daily life. For example, it can be hard to open doors if you cannot control your arms. It can be hard to communicate if you have a disability of making out sentences and words. And, it can be hard to make friends if you have a mental disability that makes you feel shy. However, even though it may not be able to go away, you can still help them progress out of their disability. For example, you can help an autistic person by helping them meet new people. For people with Cerebal Palsy, you can teach them to make out words and sentences by using pictures and sounds. These are just some examples of how you can help the disabled.

If someone has a speaking disability, I’d give them a board with every single letter or the alphabet, then ask them how they’re doing, what’s going on in their mind, or ask them I feel they need company. That’s how I’d do empathy.
