This is a TikTok of a 31 year old woman who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. She looks back at her childhood report cards to find comments written by teachers, which mostly say things like "she needs to talk less to stay on task." Those aren't simple directions given to a child with ADHD, and this woman was a child who was smart and got good grades, so her ADHD/ADD got passed off as being "chatty."

They each can cause really similar character traits in children, and can lead to difficulty learning and things like impulsivity and getting distracted easily. This video contains a list of symptoms for ADHD and trauma, and the first few are exactly the same.

Many parents don't believe in giving medicine to children for disorders such as ADHD. They usually think that it is something kids can grow out of, but that is not the case. Parents also don't think medicine is necessary because their child may still be really smart and may still get good grades, but that doesn't mean it isn't affecting them. Adults who grew up with undiagnosed/unmedicated ADHD have higher rates of divorce and don't put their best effort into important things like their job and career.

This video describes how ADHD looks different in kids rather than in adults. It is agreed that there are three components; inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. Losing things, having trouble staying focused, and getting distracted all fall under inattention, and make it the most similar for ADHD in kids and in adults. Impulsiveness in children is often a lack of patience, while in adults, it can become something like talking too much, or impulsively spending money. Hyperactivity is harder for children to control, but in adults it usually results in fidgeting and boredom.

In this video, a doctor talks about a study done in 2016 on children with ADHD, and a video game "AKL-T01." It studied their effect on this special video game that is adaptive and gives the child certain tasks, but switches between tasks to change the focus of their attention. The outcome of the study was to measure attention, and it looked like there was improved ADHD! Something they are still working on, is attempting to improve hyperactivity and impulsiveness through this game to fully improve all three pillars of ADHD.

ADHD/ADD children in different atmospheres

This video is a less informational TikTok, but it shows what ADD and ADHD really look like in children in different atmospheres. At school, when they should be focusing during class, it shows them getting distracted and playing with a pen. In the next situation, it shows them in church, and rather than listening they are playing with the book that they found in front of them. Next, it shows that while cooking, kids can become easily distracted with something like a shiny spoon or utensil, and their focus shifts which can even be dangerous around things like a hot stove. This proves that inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity can be things that affect small daily tasks, and can result in not getting a job done correctly or not putting the most effort into important things.

When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, there is usually a genetic component, and a relative is likely to have similar signs and symptoms. It is a neurological glitch related to the frontal lobe processing and functioning. Until an individual is 18 years old, the frontal lobe and things like decision making skills aren't fully developed. This can cause symptoms of ADHD to become less pronounced as a child gets older.

This video talks about how ADHD is genetic, biological, and chemical. 90% of kids with ADHD inherited it from their parents, and 10% have it from an illness or injury that affected their brain. The frontal lobe in children with ADHD develops slower than the frontal lobe of other kids their age. The frontal lobe affects things like making plans. For example, if a child dreams of becoming a doctor, it would be incredibly difficult for them to create a plan to get them where they want to be and to stay on task. Children with ADHD can also find it really difficult to make decisions and learn from their mistakes, which is an important part of growing and developing.

ADHD is a common brain disorder in children, affecting millions. There are different types, including the inattentive kind, the hyperactive-impulsive kind, and the combined kind. Being in motion and constantly fidgeting, and talking and oversharing are common symptoms of ADHD in a child. The largest symptom is not being able to focus on simple tasks. Some causes include genetics, if a mother smoked while pregnant with the baby, children that have been exposed to chemicals like PCBs and lead. There are therapeutic and medical treatment options like prescribed medication or a type of therapy that introduces children to something that helps them focus.

ADHD: What parents need to know

ADHD is usually diagnosed between ages 4-16. It is a problem where children have a difficult time paying attention. They tend to interrupt things like a lesson in school, and are very fidgety. About 10% of school-aged children have ADHD. It can be diagnosed by pediatricians, psychologists, neurologists, or psychiatrists. Some behaviors in environments like school, are inattention, ex. kids daydreaming and not paying attention, forgetting to give their parents information after the school day. They tend to just speak out, rather than raising their hands and waiting to be called on. ADHD is a condition that begins young, like under 7 years old, and continues through adulthood. Behaviors can be really disruptive and it can affect their and other students work, and they may have trouble making new friends. This can also cause stress in the family, because it can be hard to keep an eye on kids with ADHD as they are very fidgety and energetic.

I chose this topic because my older sister has had ADHD since she was little. It was never too noticeable in her because she didn't interrupt much in class and got pretty good grades, but it was clear that after a few years she had ADHD because of her inattentiveness and hyperactivity. However, my parents never really wanted to get her tested because they thought most kids act like that anyway, and she also didn't want the extra time given to kids with ADHD on tests and quizzes because she knew she wouldn't be able to sit still and focus even longer than she would have if she didn't get tested. I learned a lot about how it affects and how it is diagnosed. I also learned about different types of treatments that I didn't even know existed previously.
I found it really interesting that ADHD sticks with people throughout adulthood, and can affect social skills and can make divorce and/or depression more likely. I already knew beforehand that children with ADHD may be interruptive in class, but I didn't know that it could also mean daydreaming or just simply not paying attention. I also didn't know that it meant they may act impulsively. Lastly, I thought it was really interesting that ADHD can be genetic and can be inherited by family members.
