Hello 8th Grade math students,

We are going to engage in problem based learning during our geometry unit as it will allow us to apply our learning about geometric transformations in a real-world situation involving the arts in Memphis!

Paint Memphis, a local non-profit arts organization, has asked for our help in creating a math mural this year! They want our class to design a mural using only one figure and the following four geometric transformations; reflections, rotations, translations, and dilations. Before you can paint your actual mural on a building in Memphis, we each have to submit to them a diagram in the 4 quadrant coordinate plane of our figure’s translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations. Additionally, you have to describe to them using math vocabulary and coordinate plane directions how your mural will be created. The level of detail of your explanation must be so precise that someone else could recreate your mural.

Once you have created your mural design on the coordinate plane and written the description of how your mural was created, you will need to present your mural idea to Paint Memphis using Ed.VoiceThread. With this technology, you will be able to record yourself explaining how to create your mural in the coordinate plane while presenting your coordinate plane and modeling the transformations you used through recorded video. All videos will be shared with Paint Memphis and they will select one mural to actually be painted in Memphis.

We will all create our geometric figures (or templates) as the starting point to the project.

You will research translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations in the coordinate plane to use your template to fill the entire coordinate plane mural space (4 quadrant coordinate plane practice mural paper is provided). All four transformations must be used somewhere in your mural. I recommend starting your research with the Khan Academy videos on transformations in the coordinate plane but you can use any available resources you find helpful.

You will use your transformations to tessellate the entire mural. The entire space must be used (no empty space).

Once you have your sketch of your transformations mural, you will need to outline it in black sharpie and color and design it as if it were a real mural on a building.

Write your explanation, using transformation vocabulary, of how you took your template figure and transformed it in the coordinate plane so that someone else could recreate your mural.

Record yourself explaining how you created your geometric transformations mural using Ed.VoiceThread while recording yourself modeling the transformations in the coordinate plane with your template and coordinate plane directions.
