On Start the Week Andrew Marr explores killer diseases and the health of the world. Kathryn Lougheed focuses on one of the smartest killers humanity has ever faced - TB. It's been around since the start of civilisation and has learnt how to adapt to different environments, so today more than one million people still die of the disease every year. As with many diseases it's the poor who are most at risk. But Sir Michael Marmot explains how it's not just those at the bottom who are adversely affected, as health and life expectancy are directly related to where you are on the socio-economic ladder. The psychiatrist Lynne Jones also explores how far mental well-being is connected to human rights and the social and political worlds in which we live. She trained in one of Britain's last asylums and has travelled the world treating traumatised soldiers and civilians. Professor John Powell is interested in how far the digital world can help improve health and access to health care - from interventions for heart attacks to the treatment of depression. There are more than two hundred thousand health apps on the internet, but just how effective are they?

Following on from my announcements this morning I would just like to formalise:

• I will require you to record when you are late to lecture/seminars and the reasons for this
• If you need to leave early then you need to email me and get my permission to do so. In my absence please email your personal tutor.
• I expect appointments (GP/dentist etc) to be made on other days. If you do need to leave due to an appointment that cannot be rearranged then I want to see evidence of the appointment (e.g. letter)
• Annual leave should be taken during the annual leave weeks embedded in the 2 year planner. Where the ward cannot accommodate this then you must inform the CE and negotiate when you can take leave. This is a requirement of the TNA programme.

Attendance and punctuality are aspects of professioanlism that we expect all TNAs to demonstrate. I appreciate sometimes emergencies happen and these are usually beyond our control so cannot be helped. However, consistent lateness or leaving early is not acceptable and is disruptive to the learning of others. As a paid NHS employee during your study days I expect 100% attendance.

I know most of you already demonstrate exeptional attendance and punctuality so keep it up :-) If you recognise you need to be a bit better please try and do so. If you need any support with anything affecting your ability to attend/be punctual then please do not hesitate to speak to me or your personal tutor. Or AskUS.
Thanks Janine

Hi all, My group asked how many times they could submit their essays to check the turn-it-in/plagiarism report. Having spoken with the digital team I have created a submission area called 'Check for turn-in-it/plagiarism report' this folder will not be checked by staff but you can use this as an area to check your plagiarism report. You can submit as many times as you want between now and a week past the submission date. Each time you submit you will over write the previous submission.
I don't think there is a university standard for when we get look into an essay but I tend to look at anything over 10%. Sometimes though an essay can throw up a higher percent similiarity than 10% and be ok, it depends on how the percent is accrued. If you look at your report and it is showing alot of highlighted text and/or you haven't referenced this work to others then that is when we get really concerned.
Any questions please just ask.
BW Janine
