Use students to create the rubric for our first writing assignment based on the essential standards for the unit. Ask students to find/create exemplars for each level of the rubric.

This is a great way to involve students in their learning because they will have a better understanding of what is expected of them. We have something similar with our students, but it is a self-reflection rubric that is done at the end of each week. This is a great way to involve students in their success as well.

The open ended self reflections questions really resonated with me. What was strong? What could I improve? I'd like to also include a questions that broadens their learning beyond the assignment such as, what did I learn that I can apply to other areas? What did I learn about myself through the process?

Build it together

I think it is a good idea to include student's in making and following a rubric. It is important for student's to assess their own work and ask themselves what they need to improve on to meet their goals/targets. Involving student's in this process can help them understand what to pay attention to as well as take control over their learning

Create it themselves

When students can articulate what makes a successful paper, performance, or whatever the end product is, they are involved in their learning. Then when the create a rubric using that language, it can become a useful tool in self-assessment. Then they will know how they themselves can improve.

Collaboration with Students

Having the students participate in creating the criteria provides them a chance to reflect on what they understand about the grading process. This is a way for them to ask questions about teachers will grade and think of ways the teacher and students can meet in the middle with their expectations.

These methods will help with our new science workbooks! There are few instructions, using complicated vocabulary, and many blank spaces! Simplifying the language / pulling vocabulary, and establishing the criteria with the students on “what makes a successful response” will make this more meaningful for them!

I would have the students see the standards involved in the unit. Then, I'd ask them to identify what each standard means. From there, we'd put it into kid-friendly language. Finally, I'd ask them how they think we should "show" our knowledge.
