Two step word problems are difficult for most of my students.
After reading it out loud, we do many think alouds to think our way through how to solve a problem. Sometimes I will have the students solve the problem incorrectly so they can figure out the answer doesn't make sense. Then we think aloud what we need to do to fix the problem. I may solve the problem incorrectly to see if they can help me fix the problem.

We really enjoyed the section on "Changing How Students React to Failure". We know that sometimes students get discouraged when they make a mistake or fail. This can lead to frustration which can lead to more failure. We think one way to implement "learning from failure" in our classrooms is to create a more positive outlook on failure. In chapter five, the author states, "Experience success and failure not as a reward and punishment, but as information." This can be done by modeling making a mistake in front of students. This can be very powerful because they see teachers as "perfect" and it is also important to show how we learn from the mistakes. This will release some pressure from students and let them know that it is okay to make a mistake.
