The story itself is fictional but the book follows the events of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, the strike, and its devastating fire. The book starts with a flashforward to years after the fire. It shows a young girl meeting with someone that was in the fire, Mrs. Livingston. It is revealed that there were 3 girls, Bella, Yetta, and Jane. We don't know which one of them is Mrs. Livingston until the end. The book pans between all 3 of the girl's POVs and starts with Bella. Bella is a 15-year-old girl from Italy, She is very poor and moved to America with her distant cousin to try to make money to send to help her family back in her village. Yetta is a Russian Jew that lives with her sister Rahel. They are both revolutionaries and they are the ones mainly in charge of starting the strike. A strike is when people in the factory stop working and protest for better working conditions and wages. The women in the factory start a group called a union where wealthy people will sponsor them and pay for their living when they aren't working and the money for bail when they get arrested for striking. Jane is the daughter of a wealthy factory owner who wants to help the young girls working and wants to go to college and have more freedom as a woman at that time. Bella finds out her cousin left her and that the people she was staying with took her money for her parents and took it for themselves because her parents and family had all died of illness. Yetta found her and took her in and convinced her to join the strike. While on the picket line, the factory owners would hire ¨strike betters¨ to beat up the girls and bribe the police to arrest the girls. Jane met Yetta while she was on the Picket line during the strike and tried to support her. The strike ends up getting resolved and the working conditions improve slightly but end up faltering again. Jane ends up finding out that in her dad's factory when there was a strike and he hired strike betters and were treating them just as unfairly, so she left. She moved in with Bella and Yetta and found work as a tutor for one of the factory owner's two girls. While Yetta and Bella were at work Jane brought the 2 girls she watches to go see their dad at work. The fire started on the 8th floor where Yetta worked because someone dropped a cigarette in a bin of shirtwaists. Jane and Bella were on the tenth floor. Yetta ran upstairs with a boy named Jacob. After warning them Jacob and Yetta ran out the window and tried to jump to a fire net below, but they missed. Jane sent Bella to get the 2 girls and their dad because she was closer and Bella made it to the roof with them and made it to the building next door and to safety. Jane got trapped in a room and also died. The factory pays very low and has terrible working conditions, making Anya want to join a union. S]oon a horrific fire destroyed the factory leaving Galena with terrible, and horrible memories. Galena uses the support of friends, family, and Jewish traditions to inspire her to fight for workers' rights.  

 There are a lot of similarities and differences between these two books. One similarity is the fact that Galena is Jewish and Yetta is Jewish. They both show their religion consistently throughout the book. A difference is that Galena uses her faith to help her through tough times, and Yetta stops believing in her religion.  A different similarity is the idea of protesting for workers' rights and joining a union. Both main characters join the union and fight for their rights. In contrast, another difference is the time line of the two stories. She was very strict and Jane did not like her much and she was always telling Jane what to do. Jane's driver hit Bella with his car and Jane brought her home for her to heal. Miss Milhouse was disgusted and tried to throw Bella out.
