After reading the article on positionality, my major take-away was how hard it can be for some people to realize that universal truths are contingent on one's own identity and experiences. I think as an educator, it is important to realize that our students are coming into our own classroom with unique backgrounds and self perceptions which affect their ideas and opinions about what they are learning. It is crucial to understand how positionality affects us all to reflect on how one's experience can change attitudes towards education and content being taught.

Visible Thinking Routine

When hearing the topic, "Visible Thinking Routines", I did not know what they were or how to use them in my classroom but after researching the terms, I realized that I have used some of this techniques in my own classroom before without realizing they were VTR's. The technique that I learned about and think is very interesting is the Circle of Viewpoint. This routine allows students to think and consider different perspectives about a reading or certain topic learned in class. This technique can be used to brainstorm new ideas when starting a new topic or reading. Students can each take turns to act out a diverse range of viewpoints during a whole or small group discuss. Students can answer statements like "I am thinking of _________from the point of view of____________." Or another student could ask, "A question I have from this viewpoint is ________________." This will allow students to think outside of the box and to put themselves in a different character or person's shoes to express ideas in a new and unique way. I would use this VTR when beginning a new reading or when researching current events that affect my Spanish classroom. I am excited to learn about more VTR's that I can use in my own class or share with colleagues to help students stay engaged and experience class in a different way.

Article Response- "Disrupting and Dismantling the Dominant Vision of Youth of Color

In this article, one important sentence that made me think was about the recent murders of teenagers like Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis. As an avid CNN viewer, I couldn't help but hear about the murders of these young people and this article made me think about it in a different way than I had before. The sentence, "Certain social constructs of adolesence/ts get certain adolescents killed." This sentence shook me as it made me realize that many teens may be dealing with more than just classes and textbooks and some may lost their life based on racism and ignorance from people in authority. It also made me think about those who are privileged adolescents may also be privileged with regard to education as well. As a teacher, we need to strive to reach every student and to realize how discussions of race and race related texts in our classroom can affect our students in many ways. It is also important to realize that not every teen has an idealized version of their adolescence that is present in popular tv, movies and books and that for young men of color, the assumption of adolescence may not be present for them in their daily lives. It is important to pay attention how you address race and diversity in your classroom and take into account how social stigmas surrounding race and gender may affect the students in your classes.
