Acquisition of hikmah

Hikmah in Islam refers to wisdom, intellect, and sound judgment that guide a person to understand the true nature of things and act according to Allah’s commands.

Hikmah can be acquired through Ibadah (worship) when it is performed with sincerity, humility, and devotion. Islam regards hikmah as a precious value for believers, as stated in the hadith that "wisdom is the lost property of a believer, wherever it is found, they are most entitled to it".

The objective of hikmah is to help individuals deeply understand Islam and live according to its teachings. In education, the concept of hikmah pedagogy encourages higher-order thinking, inquiry skills, and the internalization of Islamic values, enabling students to practice what they learn in real life.

The acquisition of ḥikmah is closely connected to three key elements:

Niyyah (intention) – Every action must be done sincerely for Allah alone. Deeds without proper intention may not be accepted. Correct niyyah requires sincerity, clarity, focus, purity of intention, and consistency throughout the act of worship.

ʿAmal (actions/deeds) – Good deeds and acts of worship such as prayer, zakat, fasting, hajj, and kindness demonstrate devotion to Allah. The value of amal depends not only on the action itself but also on the sincerity and consistency behind it.

Ihsan (excellence in worship and character) – Ihsan means worshipping Allah as if one sees Him, knowing that Allah always sees us. It involves cultivating virtues such as compassion, honesty, patience, and humility. Ihsan is developed through awareness, understanding, practice, reflection, and continuous self-improvement.

In conclusion, ḥikmah is achieved through sincere intention (niyyah), righteous action (amal), and excellence in character (ihsan), all rooted in worship and conscious obedience to Allah.

Reasons and Sources of Hikmah in Ibadah

The pillars of Islam each have their own laws, purposes, and wisdom (hikmah). For example, fasting teaches empathy by allowing us to feel what others who are less fortunate experience.

Wisdom can also be seen in Allah’s signs, such as in Surah Ar-Rahman, where Allah mentions the meeting of saltwater and freshwater with a barrier between them. When Allah asks, “Which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?”, it reminds humans to reflect rather than question Allah’s decrees.

Allah provides answers and guidance so that we may become better people. Whatever we go through in life is from Allah, and He is always present. Everything that happens carries wisdom.

Scholars (ulama’) emphasize fear of Allah (taqwa), obedience to His commands, and the balance between knowledge (‘ilm) and action (‘amal). True gratitude means being thankful rather than constantly questioning Allah’s decisions.

Humility (tawaduk), sincerity (ikhlas) in worship, and avoiding showing off are highly valued. Allah grants better rewards to those who worship sincerely compared to those who seek recognition.

Understanding Allah’s commands deeply depends on intention (niyyah). When actions are done purely for Allah, clarity and acceptance follow. Allah never tests a person beyond their capacity, as He has promised.

Believers are taught not to think badly of Allah or of other people. The concept of ihsan means worshipping Allah as if we see Him, and this leads to self-reflection (muhasabah).

In Islam, wisdom is connected to intention and sincerity. A complete Muslim is one who combines knowledge, practice, and good character. Whatever blessings or knowledge we receive are not only for ourselves, but also to benefit others.

Preparation in Salah, with khushu

Preparing ṣalāh with khushūʿ begins even before we stand on the prayer mat. It starts with purification, where wuḍūʾ is not only a physical cleansing but also a spiritual preparation that reminds us we are about to stand before Allah.

- Ensuring our body, clothing and place of prayer are clean

- Covering the ʿawrah properly

- Praying within the correct time

- Facing the qiblah

These elements are all essential for our prayer to be valid. These requirements teach us discipline, awareness, and respect for the act of worship.

During ṣalāh, fulfilling its pillars such as intention,

- Reciting al-Fātiḥah, rukūʿ, sujūd, and giving salām in the correct order

This is crucial, as leaving any of them would invalidate the prayer. At the same time, Islam encourages us to beautify our ṣalāh through sunnah actions like reciting duʿāʾ iftitāḥ, maintaining calm movements, and focusing our gaze at the place of sujūd. Acts that disturb the prayer, such as excessive movement, speaking, or praying while distracted by hunger or discomfort, should be avoided because they reduce the quality and serenity of ṣalāh.

Khushūʿ itself is not a pillar of ṣalāh, yet it is the soul of the prayer. It refers to being fully present, humble, and aware that we are communicating with Allah. Among the biggest obstacles to khushūʿ are waswās and the attachment of the heart to worldly matters. Therefore, Islam guides us to prepare our hearts by praying on time, understanding the meanings of what we recite, choosing a quiet place, avoiding unnecessary distractions, and making duʿāʾ for focus and sincerity.

In situations where water cannot be used, tayammum reflects the mercy and ease of Islam, ensuring that worship is never abandoned. Overall, proper preparation, correct performance, and sincere presence of the heart work together to help us achieve a ṣalāh that is not only valid, but meaningful — a prayer that shapes our character and strengthens our relationship with Allah.

Fasting & Its Virtues

Fasting is an act of worship prescribed by Allah for the believers, just as it was prescribed for those before them. The Qur’anic address “O believers” shows that fasting is a test of true faith, as it can only be carried out with sincerity and obedience. By mentioning previous nations, Allah eases the sense of burden and motivates Muslims to fulfil this obligation with greater commitment and excellence.

The primary objective of fasting is to attain taqwa, which means being mindful and cautious of anything that displeases Allah. Fasting trains a believer to control desires and remain conscious of Allah in both private and public. As explained by the scholars, taqwa is like walking carefully on a thorny path, where one constantly guards their actions to avoid harm.

Fasting is not limited to abstaining from food and drink alone. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized that Allah does not need a person’s hunger and thirst if they continue lying or behaving immorally. This highlights that the true value of fasting lies in self-discipline, honesty, and moral conduct.

One of the greatest virtues cultivated through fasting is sabr, or patience. This includes patience in obeying Allah, patience in refraining from what He has forbidden, and patience in enduring hardship. Through hunger and restraint, fasting strengthens the soul to remain firm and steadfast in all aspects of life.

According to Imam al-Ghazali, fasting has different levels, beginning with physical restraint, progressing to guarding the limbs from sin, and reaching the highest level where the heart is protected from worldly distractions and focused solely on Allah. This shows that fasting is a journey of spiritual growth that deepens according to one’s intention and effort.

Fasting also nurtures mercy and empathy within the believer. Experiencing hunger and thirst allows one to understand the struggles of the less fortunate, encouraging compassion and generosity. The Prophet ﷺ promised equal reward for those who provide food for others to break their fast, reflecting the strong emphasis Islam places on community care and kindness.

Overall, fasting is a holistic form of worship that develops taqwa, patience, moral integrity, and empathy, transforming the believer both spiritually and socially.
