HE would sink the gaff to a depth of four feet or so, sometimes with a fish speared on the hook as bait and when a fish was in the right spot he would jerk the gaff up in attempt to spear the fish. This a struggle for Pi in multiple ways. Pi Struggled to get the turtle into the raft, but he eventually pulled him up to the raft. The turtle was very violent, which also added onto the difficulty for Pi to get it into the boat and handle it. Once Pi got the turtle into the boat, he read the survival manual and it had a section and how to butcher a turtle. Since Pi could not reach the neck of the turtle, he stabbed the knife straight into his head. The turtle tried to slip out of the shell to get away, but he was unsuccessful. He collected the blood and drank it and he felt better.

It started with a soft green algae that clung to the life jackets. Stiffer algae of a darker kind joined it. They did well and became thick. Animal life appeared. The first that I aw were tiny translucent shrimp, hardly half an inch long. They were followed by fish no bigger that looked like they were permanently under an x ray. Then black worms with white spines, and lastly crabs. Pi tried everything but the worms including the algae. He allows Richard Parker to recover, then repeats the process until the whistle alone is enough to make the tiger retreat. Pi gets the turtles shell and uses a rope to string a bunch of shells together. When RP goes to scratch him, Pi uses the shield to protect himself. The shield was heavy, but Pi caught another turtle that was smaller and had a lighter shell and it still worked. Pi made a total of 5 shields, and the fifth one lasted till the end of his training.

All that Pi has to read is his diary, which is hard to read because of the handwriting. Pi wants to have a Bible, because the first time he read the Bible, he busted into tears. But now, he has no novel and nothing to read during his free time.

Pi tells RP that everything is God's and God is the reason for all of this happening. This shows that through everything, Pi is still a firm believer in God and he trusts the process. At this point Pi still believes in all three religions.
