Divorce is very common and can affect children's education and mental health. It is estimated that about 25% of children who experience parental divorce suffer from emotional and behavioral problems (American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, n.d.). The American Counseling Association code of ethics lists the following ethical guidelines that apply to group sessions.

Section A.9.a  states that proper screening should be conducted in group settings in order to ensure that the students selected are compatible with group goals. 


Section B.4. specifies the importance of establishing and explaining confidentiality within the group.

Universality- Students will see that they are not alone in their struggles. Additionally, they will see others who are experiencing a similar situation and feelings. 

Installation of Hope- Students will learn that they can learn to manage their emotions with coping skills. 

Altruism- As students learn how to manage their emotions they are able to help others in finding ways to cope by sharing their experiences. 

Direct Advice- Students and the facilitator will share coping mechanisms with the group in order to find something that works for each student.
