Basically he wanted to kill toothless and he also feed toothless the fish despite being scared
he saved toothless
he becomes hesitant and eventually decides to svae toothless

His captain helped in feeding Toothless the fish because he needed the courage to move towards Toothless, a massive dragon that could swallow Hiccup in a few seconds.

His Poet thinks about how Toothless would feel, like feeling very hungry. Because of that, Hiccup feels bad for Toothless and goes to feed Toothless the fish.
