The Jewish festival of Passover has its roots in biblical times. The time when God sent Moses to free the Israelites from enslavement by the Egyptians. As a result of the Pharaoh’s denial however, God cast the 10 plagues upon Egypt which included the slaying Egypt’s firstborn sons. In order to protect themselves from the angel of death, according to the Tanakh (Torah) - Exodus 12:7 “They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they are to eat it”. This way, the angel of death would understand to ‘pass over’ all the homes of the Israelites due to the lambs blood serving as protection.

• Freedom is a major theological theme revolving around the festival of Passover. This is because the Jews were freed from enslavement, and now free to practice their faith freely.

• Redemption is also an important theological theme regarding Passover. God personally intervened with the 10 plagues, among other things, to help free the Israelites from slavery. To give both them and their descendants another chance for redemption.
