He was given the nickname "Black Jack" because he had spent time with the Tenth Cavalry, an all-black regiment (McCormick, 2017). Led the 10th in the battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War. He is most famous for his role as commander of AEF in World War 1. Congress promoted him to the rank of "General of the Armies of the United States" in 1919. British and French wanted to have U.S. troops incorporated in their own armies. Second, was obtaining the immense shipments of men and supplies from Washington be cause of red tape and lack of vision.
Next accomplishment was he presented his entire American force to Marshal Foch's disposal to take the fight to the Germans. Pershing had to argue with Foch to keep his force as an American force and not split up. “We came American. We shall remain American and go into battle with Old Glory over our heads.
