(I also liked their idea of having students write down or take pictures of everyday writing such as graffiti so they could look at it through a critical literacy lens). I think I was confusing "reading" and "communication" with literacy. Literacy, especially critical literacy (which is now my FAVORITE kind of the many literacies) is so much more. Although it is not critical thinking, must think critically to become literate. Literacy means you can read, interpret, understand information that is explicitly written and make inferences about the many invisible factors influencing person taking in the information. While this is of course still very true, there is so much more to literacy than I realized. Literacy is about perspective, conversation, and communication. Its not always going to be about sitting down and practicing reading lines from a book.
