Crooks, because of the isolation he has faced all his life due to his race, isolates himself from the others on the ranch more than he needs to. Some of the men on the ranch, like Lennie and Candy, would accept him even though he is black. Crooks doesn't allow himself to make friends because he is afraid of rejection. This can be seen in how Crooks initially asked to work on Lennie's farm, and then changed his mind.

Crooks is a black male. On the ranch, the white men discriminate against him because he is black. In this way, the ranch is a microcosm of the world at this time, because there was much discrimination towards African Americans at this time.

Crooks was isolated from the other workers at the ranch because of his skin tone, he is black. This meant he had a completely separate bunker, that was of less quality than the bunker the whites were in. He was forced to stay alone at night, and he wasn't able to communicate with anyone else.

Crooks feels inferior to white people and therefore isolates himself, all while having a dream to be unified no matter his skin tone.
