During the trip to Mexico Maya was faced with a challenge that made her a Stronger woman than she already was. After going to a fiesta which was the reason that brought them their Mayas dad was intoxicated and was not gonna be able to drive home safely. Knowing Maya and her self confidence she thought of driving to her fathers house herself "I was superbly intelligent and had good physical coordination . Of course i could drive." This shows how Maya was a very Independent Maya really was because in her eyes she could do absolutely anything.

While Maya was was in St Louis she experianced a awful thing that no one should experience by getting raped by Mr. Freeman. In chapter 11 Maya said "I forgot about him and the memory of him holding precious melted into the general darkness". this shows the progression of how Maya started seeing how people were treating her differently and so she relizes how bad these people are

Mayas time in San Francisco was a little confusing for her. while she was there she said "In San Francisco for the first time Percieved myself as a part of something". later on she would realize that what was around her was not what she first thought. instead she realized that there was still racism there and it will always be there no matter what.

Stamps was the town that Maya was faced with the most challenges. This town would beat her down and do things that were morally wrong but she would always stay strong. in chapter 4 Maya says "In Stamps the segregation was so complete that most Black children didn’t really, absolutely know what whites looked like. Other than that they were different, to be dreaded." This shows the challenges that she was faced with and the society that she grew up in. there was another part of the story were she says that shes not comfterable living in her own town. this shows how Maya was self dependant and always had her own back

The store is were Maya was at her best as she felt the most comfortable and at home. The store was a place were the black community would hang around in stamps and it made them all feel like they were in a safe space. Around the middle of the book theres talk about how there was barely and room in the store and how they all cramed in there with very little space. This shows the how comfortable she really was here and how she felt she fit in.
