Charles Dickens is a famous English writer. People all over the world enjoy his stories. They’re always full of interesting 'characters' . Readers like a good story, with interesting characters. Dickens was very clever at making up characters. Many of Dickens's stories came out in weekly or monthly parts, as serials. Each month people could read a new chapter in the story. Perhaps this is why Dickens' s so famous and why his books make good films and TV serials too.

Charles Dickens, was born in 7 February 1812 in Portsmouth. The Dickens never had much money. His parents dreamed a better life for all the family. In 1816 they moved to Chatam. Charles went to school here. In 1822 Charles had to work in a factory to help his family. In 1824 Charles back to school. Then he got a job writing about Parliament, he wrote for a newspaper and wrote stories about the people he met.

When Charles Dickens started to write novels he used the pen-name of 'Boz. He wrote a lot of novels such as 'Oliver Twist' and 'David Copperfield' but the story we are interested in is 'A Christmas Carol' written in 1844 . This book depicts the life of an old selfish man, Scrooge. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge is visited by Jacob Marley's ghost, his old partner of business who died many years before. He warned Scrooge he'll be visited by 3 ghosts: Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. Each ghost will show Scrooge the mistakes he made in the past and the ones he will make in the future. So, in the end, Scrooge decides to be more kind and more generous.

In 1846 Dickens became editor of the Daily News, a newspaper but soon after he started his own magazine Household Words. Dickens became so famous people knew him as he walked about London. He is also the most famous novelist in Britain . Of his many books, Dickens liked 'David Copperfield' best and one of the most famous story is 'A Christmas Carol'.

During his life, Dickens saw many changes caused by the Industrial Revolution and in his books he wrote about this theme. In 1864, Dickens and Ellen Ternan were in a train crash, Dickens never recovered after this accident.
Dickens died in 1870 at home while ne was writing a new book.
