During the first week of school, getting to know my students and building relationships is critical to fostering trust and respect. Students completed an "About Me" T-shirt design with specific prompts that allowed us to connect with each other. Students had the opportunity to share and find similar interests and backgrounds. We hung them as a clothesline for back-to-school night so students could showcase their T-shirt designs.

I learned that many students prefer dim lights, like to be read to, and enjoy soft instrumental music while they read.

In our Native American Tradition History Lesson, students are assessed informally and formally throughout the lesson.

Before I began the lesson, students responded to questions via multiple choice/number self-assessment to check for background knowledge.
During the lesson, students used the stop-jot-and-draw strategy to show understanding of the material.
After the lesson, students used technology like BrainPOP for a final formal assessment. BrainPOP provided results with specific data on current student knowledge.

All students were engaged in self-assessment, goal setting, and progress monitoring. They had their I-Ready folder, where we met every trimester to discuss their current academic levels in reading and math. Then, we talked about their specific needs and areas for improvement to reach grade level. Together, we established an individualized goal for the next trimester. I also provided them with time and worksheets for self-reflection and strategies for achieving their goals.

As a fifth-grade team, we saw an intensive need to examine our teaching strategies to improve our students' reading skills so they read at grade level.
