My question is, many justifications for democracy are based on the assumption that every individual would put in careful consideration and research before they vote. However, in reality, especially in situations where voting is mandatory, many people do not do that, and even more of them would be easily bought by the candidates’ marketing strategies. In this case, does democracy truly reflex most people’s opinions?

Is it feasible to merge the ideas of a meritocracy and a democracy so that one could vote but the candidates must be 'experts' in their respective fields? Surely this would limit populist movements that enabled divisive candidates like Trump and Bolsonaro to rise to power and instead allow for a more educated and better functioning state?
