Drew Vickars uses film to capture detail portrait photography, whilst incorporating interesting fashion looks into the images. I like the way use has used a wide depth of field in this image as it creates a focus on all the aspects of the models body.
The high key lighting emphasises the details on the models skin and shows a clear contrast between their dark clothes against their skin. The white background makes the tones in the image more interesting as it makes you focus on the tone of their skin and the contrast of it is then compared against the background and the clothes.
The position of the model is foetal and presents closed body language, however this is contradicted by the lower angle of the camera and the intensity of the model staring into the camera, which asserts their dominance.
Drew Vickars work inspires me as he uses a diverse range of models within his pictures, and captures the beauty of humans through fashion and individuality. He also creates the perfect tones and contrast to fit with the models skin tone, and when I take portrait images for my final piece I want to use the correct lighting and props in order to really emphasise the look of the image I want.

Adama Jalloh is a London based photographer who documents the African community through portrait photography. They use documentation photography as a way to explore Afrosurrealism, as it is a form of storytelling and can reflect personal experiences and explore reality. Afrosurrealism also challenges traditional western views and terminology in art-making.

Jalloh uses close-up photography to emphasise intricate details which can help the audience to understand the models identity. The depth of field in this picture is focused on the model which creates a very powerful stance. The contrast of the white background against his skin reinforces his culture and ethnicity, which is very important to Jalloh as their photography focuses on the African community. The lighting is coming from the right side which makes one side of his face brighter than the other, however the focused depth of field allows us to read his facial expressions. He seems very serious and is looking straight into the camera, which may be him reflecting his story to the photographer, which Jalloh is able to present to us very clearly.

Paul Mpagi Sepuya is a photographer who's projects consist of portraiture, queer and homoerotic networks of production and collaboration, and the material and conceptual potential of blackness at the heart of the medium. His interests also include queer literary modernism, questions of artistic responsibility and care regarding representation and refusal.

This photo 'Mirror Study' is interesting as the photographer has full control over what the image is, as he is the one taking the photo. He has included different parts of his body within the collage, which may each represent a different part of him. It is taken in a studio and I like how the photographer hasnt tried to hide that, which creates a sense of realism.
He uses high-key lighting which is used to highlight every aspect of the picture, and make all the individual colours and tones stand out against each other. This type of lighting again emphasises realism as there isn't a filter and the tones of the photo are represented as they would be seen in real life.
The wide depth of field makes everything in the photo have equal focus which reinforces each aspect of the photo to the viewer.
This photo definitely is subjective as the images are positioned in a specific way, and I would like to know the reasoning behind the body parts he chose to represent and how this expresses him as a person.

This image consists of two images put together almost to look like they are one. Each model takes a photo each, which may represent the equality of the relationship and also their different angle, and the angle they want to take the photo. I find this really interesting as it plays tricks on the mind as you begin to realise they are two different photos. I like how the models have authority over how they want to look and pose, as they are the ones taking the photo. A subjective reading of this image may propose the control that this relationship have over the representation of themselves, and the closeness between them whether they have a queer relationship or not. This may reinforce them being comfortable within their sexualities and taking back the power from heterosexual relationships that are more commonly represented throughout arts.

Harley Weir is a London-born photographer known for creating intimate images along with portrait photography and editorial/commercial work. She interprets individuality and documentation through portrait images of all different types of people and allowing them to be expressive in how they look. She usually styles in very unique and abstract ways.

The example I chose was quite simple compared to her other stuff as I would like to interpret simplistic yet subjective images for my final piece.
The model she has chosen to photograph has an obvious subjective reading through the scar across his face, which the focused depth to field helps to reiterate. His direct eye contact into the camera makes the photo very personal and reflects his individuality through the story he has to tell behind the scar. By the clothes he is wearing he seems to be quite covered, which may reinforce his stories and emotions he has experienced, yet never expressed.

This portrait caught my eye not only due to the beauty within the tones and colours, but also how it contradicts the medias stereotypes around beauty standards. Weir's photography really reinforces the beauty behind every individual, and the blue low-key lighting compliments the models skin and outfit, which is unique and beautiful. The subjective reading on this photo is taken through the use of the outfit, and what the model/photographer is expressing through this unique look.

Weir's work inspires me through not only the unique fashion aspect, but through the way she uses a range of people from different backgrounds to express individuality and documents portrait photography through a way that challenges stereotypes and typical images shown in mainstream media.

BLACK AND WHITE- shows the contrast between a black background and a white background. I used dramatic lighting on the black background photo to create a darker tone and low-key lighting. For the white background photo I used softer lighting as to create a high-key lighting affect.

I wanted to focus specifically on different ways of portraying portrait photography, in a way to interpret fashion and individuality. My idea was to create profiles of different people juxtaposed with a plain portrait of them, like a passport photo. The passport photo would only give away plain aspects of their identity, and I wanted to put this next to another photo of them wearing what they want and interpreting different facial expressions/poses to contrast with the passport like photos, in order to reinforce their individuality. I will then ask them questions on why they chose to dress and model like this, which I will write on the profile to add more information to them.

The image attached is a photo taken for the brand 'Helmut Lang' which is a minimalist and constructivist clothing brand. I though this was interesting inspiration for the passport like photos I would like to take, as the clothing is simple yet makes an affective portrait, especially for B&W film. The plain clothing brings out their facial features which will be less visible when the model wears more extravagant clothing.
This will reinforce how fashion can tell a story about someones identity, and I feel this is important, especially in youth culture now, as fashion is a very forward way to portray self expression

I decided to use this shoot as a practice to see if portraits looked better on a black or white background, and also to try different poses and shot types.

For my final project I have decided to use portrait photography, and I am going to use multiple different models. I am going to firstly take a photo of them wearing white and positioning them the way I want them to be- a lot like a typical photographer would do so. I am then going to take a photo juxtaposing this- my idea is to let them secondly pose how they want to be and to wear the clothes they want to wear. This is to reinforce self expression and especially how in modelling industries a lot of models are told what to do and what to wear. This project is to try and emphasise how corrupt the modelling industry is, and the difference it makes to give the models freedom within the shoot of what they want to do and what makes them comfortable. I feel this is important especially for the identites of the youth, which is a very compelling subject to many especially with what is shown in the media of the perfect 'pose' which is clearly not what people look like on a daily basis.

I used this shoot to do a mix of both- the models wore what they want however I told them to pose as a professional model would, just to see the outcome of the photos. I decided to go with a white background as I believe this is more fitting for studio portraits as it highlights the individual through lighting and also brings out the tones of the individual and their clothes and features.
