France was on the verge of a revolution, it was about to be bankrupt. Napoleon was born to be an enemy of France. He went to a military school and graduated early form it. This allowed him to have good tactics, strategies, and skills when it comes to fighting in wars. France was struggling and eventually everything happened in his life, he went to go and take over France. All of his different skills allowed to nation to make many victories and have tons of gains for Napoleon and his nation.

Source: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Napoleon-I
Napoleon's education started ever since he was very young. He was sent to a French military academy in mainland France to escape his impoverished island. He graduated as a second lieutenant of artillery and returned to Corsica. Eventually, he returned to mainland France and was appointed as the first lieutenant of the 4th regiment of artillery. He became a strong supporter and figure of the French revolution, eventually being promoted to captain in the army. After the national assembly abolished the monarchy, Bonaparte became major, then becoming promoted to adjutant general a month later. After yet another victory, he finally became a brigadier general because of his accomplishments.

A fact that I learned from this video was that Napoleon was born and grew up on a small island, with his family, called Corsica. He has a big family and was the second sibling out of 8, which came with many downsides. His father was a part of an Italian Nobel family but that did not mean his family was wealthy. This is one of the reasons why Napoleon was sent to military school; since the expenses of all of the children was too much. At the time when Napoleon was a child, Corsica was under the rule of France and his father was against the France. This impacted Napoleons’ view of France and shaped his future starting from when he went to military school. This is an image of his family tree.

Sources:
- Armchair Historian Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVZ4R4L_t2U
- https://www.history.com/topics/france/napoleon

The Russians had strategical ideas to burn down their towns and cities so that Napoleon and his troops could not take the supplies that could be found in them. On his march to Moscow The French army was running out of supplies and the number of soldiers kept decreasing. The Russians would snipe the French army and remain unseen, this was one of their strategy’s and it worked very well. Napoleon returned back to France with more than 200,000 less men than he started with.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjgzdnly8X0AhUIkokEHcQqCQkQFnoECAoQAw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.napoleon-series.org%2Ffaq%2Fc_russia.html&usg=AOvVaw17A5U8iSzZBDaB4t-Wrsfm

One of Napoleons’s achievements was when he overthrew the directory council. He was a military commander which gave him a position with influence therefore, he was named First Consul. Napoleon being the head of the government and military commander gave him an important role and which helped him win victories. As, he began to gain power since he was named First Consul he became the Emperor. Another thing that Napoleon established or achieved was a Continental System. This was his strategy to weaken Britain’s economy and banned trade with with them. Napoleon’s motive was to help France’s economy as the result. However, this system was a fail and led to his fall.
(Source was video)
https://courses.lumenlearning.com/suny-hccc-worldhistory2/chapter/the-continental-system/

https://www.britannica.com/topic/foreign-policy

People of France did not trust anymore and even exiled him to the island of Elba. When he escaped the island for a few months, known as the “Hundred Days” , he obtained followers. Although, the additional defeat caused him to be exiled to St Helena where he died at 52 years old.

(Source: History.com and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVZ4R4L_t2U)

Santhosh Divyakolu

Napoleon’s downfall was very eventful. Napoleon led an army of 600,000 men into Russia in 1812. Napoleon had his forces march on towards Moscow, but little did he know that the Russian’s created an idea known as “Scorched Earth” which meant that Russia would burn their towns and cities to ground; they’d have everyone to escape to the hills and snipe the French soldiers. Napoleon waited months but soon he was going to face the harsh Russian winter, so he was forced to retreat whatever was left of his army. During his retreat, however, the Russians harassed them as they retreated, mercilessly killing many French soldiers. Napoleon came out of Russia with about only 10,000 men out of the 600,000 troops who he began with. Tragically, at the same time as the disastrous Russian invasion, the French was also fighting the Peninsular War from 1808 to 1814. Sadly, this battle resulted in the Spanish and Portuguese. Following this loss, in 1813 he also lost the Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations. He was defeated by a coalition which included Austrian, Prussian, Russian, and Swedish troops. Napoleon was forced to retreat to France but in 1814, the coalition forces captured Paris. Napoleon was then forced to abdicate the throne on April 6 of 1814.

Source:
https://www.history.com/topics/france/napoleon#section_6

Napoleon gained the attention of the directory by triumphing over his uprisings. Then he was placed in charge of the French army against the Italians. Napoleon ended up winning the war against Italy and Austria and France started to gain power. This was one of the major wars he had won and a lot of France’s citizens put a lot of their trust in him. In 1799 an event known as Coup of 18 Brumaire, Napoleon was part of a group that overthrew the French Directory. It went from a 5 man directory to a 3 man Consulate under Napoleon’s influence. Napoleon was France’s leading political figure. After defeating some of France’s enemies he was established as the First Consul, and to make matters better, in 1802 the British agreed to be at peace with the French with the Treaty of Amiens. (It only lasted for a year though so it was kind of useless). After Napoleon went into power he restored stability to France after the revolution. He made a lot of liberal choices at the time and that ensured the people’s trust in him.
https://www.history.com/topics/france/napoleon#section_2
https://www.buncombeschools.org/common/pages/UserFile.aspx?fileId=5362638

Napoleon attempted to invade Russia after Russia stopped using the continental system that Napoleon set in place to stop trade with Britain. This invasion in Russia however would end up being a failure after Napoleon entered Russia with 680,000 men and left with only 10,000 men. Russia managed to defeat Napoleon through a strategy called scorched Earth, where Russia would destroy and burn everything as they retreated deeper into Russia. Once Napoleon reached Moscow he found the city was burned and the Russian winter was soon approaching so he fled Russia and only made it out with 10,000 soldiers. Sources: https://courses.lumenlearning.com/suny-hccc-worldhistory2/chapter/invasion-of-russia/ and https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/napoleon-enters-moscow

He was elected membership to the National Institute. When Napoleon set off with his army to block Britain trade routes it wasn’t just Napoleon and his army. Since they were exploring Napoleon brought scientists, engineers, and scholars. He wanted France to learn the topography, environment, culture, and history of Egypt. One of Napoleon’s Captains Pierre Francois-Xavier Bouchard came across a slab.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 in Corsica. He was born after Corsica was taken over by the French and his parents were Carlo Bonaparte and Letizia Rampling. Growing up, he strongly disliked the French because they took over the place of his birth. At the age of 9, Napoleon was already fairly educated and throughout the course of the next 5 years he would go to attend several military schools. His father died of stomach cancer at the age of 16 and around this time he also graduated from military school. He joined the French military and over the years he quickly went up the ranks to from captain to general to commander and from then on he achieved things for France that would forever change its history.

Source: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Napoleon-I

Napoleon’s military career of 20 years is not particularly long, when compared to other generals like Caesar or Patton, but he, over the span of 70 engagements is the best military strategist of all time. He was an expert artillery commander and reformed the outdated French Army to win battles rapidly and preventing the opponent from ever having a chance to fight back. Out of his 70 battles, he emerged victorious from 62 of them, only losing 8. His most decisive and best overall battle according to me is either Austerlitz or Jena-Auerstedt. At Austerlitz, Napoleon was outnumbered by the Russian and Austrian Coalition, but ended up winning the battle suffering only 2,000 men either killed or captured, compared to over 35,000 causalities or captured men for the Coalition troops. This is the battle where Napoleon’s legacy was secured forever. At the battle of Jena-Auerstedt, Napoleon had roughly 60,000 troops compared to Prussia’s 120,000 troops. Due to Napoleon’s skill, not only did the French win the twin battles, but Napoleon suffered only 12,000 casualties when compared to over 41,000 casualties for Prussian troops. These battles were all fought against the best generals at the time, including the German General Blucher, the British General Wellington and the Russian General Kutuzov. All of these men were among the best Generals of their time, but still nothing when compared to Napoleon.
Source - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_career_of_Napoleon_Bonaparte

Napoleon established many systems in attempts to restore order in France after the revolution. Some of these laws closed the social gap between the rich and poor. An example of this was his reforming of the education system; he wanted a form of widespread education (including religion). In his establishment of the school system, him including Catholicism appealed to individuals. This was putting into action the agreement he signed with the Pope saying he would restore Catholicism (the concordat). Napoleon started Lycées: uniform schools for boys. White boys between the age of 10-16, rich or poor, were able to attend these schools. He thought education for girls was important as well, but different subjects should be taught. According to him, girls should be taught domestic skills to be good housewives and mothers (in addition to some other basic subjects like writing).

Source: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi5jtLxzcX0AhXqRzABHXVZBU4QFnoECBcQAw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.napoleon-series.org%2Fresearch%2Fsociety%2Fc_education.html&usg=AOvVaw1thdBV2TCpTBeuNezPVO9l

Josephine Bonaparte was Napolean’s first wife. Before her marriage to Napoleon, she had married other men, had a dispute, and divorced them. While married to Napoleon, she rejected Napolean’s letters expressing his love. While he was on the battlefield, Josephine cheated on Napolean which led to Napolean’s distrust in her and they were close to a divorce. After the couple renewed their marriage under the new titles of emperor and empress, Josephine hoped their marriage would be steady. However, her eccentricity and inability to give Napoleon a child (which meant no heir to his throne) resulted in an annulment of their marriage.
Source: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Josephine

Napoleon was a skilled strategist and fighter. However his weakness was naval battles, since his strengths laid on land. An example of this type of battle soon became known as the battle of Trafalgar, which occurred on October 21, 1805. Napoleon’s navy was a combination of 18 French and 15 Spanish ships. It was a total of 33 ships against the 27 British vessels. Napoleon still managed to loose despite his large number. It was the skill of the English that gave them the victory.Napoleon realized that land based battles were his strong suite. Soon, he decided to enter the Russian empire. His army held an impressive number of around 600,000 men. Sadly, Napoleon only returned with a small number of around 10,000. When France acknowledged this, they realized of his inability to remain victorious. Napoleon’s reputation was ruined and he was exiled to the Island of Elba on April 11, 1814.

Source:https://www.history.com/news
https://www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-Trafalgar-European-history

Napoleon was born in Corsica, just 15 months after France had conquered it from Italy "I was born when [Corsica] was perishing. Thirty thousand Frenchmen spewed on to our shores, drowning the throne of liberty in waves of blood... The cries of the dying, the groans of the oppressed and tears of despair surrounded my cradle from the hour of my birth." Afterwards, many Corcians continued to rebel against French rule. Napoleon’s father Carlo however, conformed to France. Napoleon was ashamed of him because of this. Napoleon came to France for the first time at 9 years old where he attended military school. He learned French but kept his corcian accent, which made him a target of mockery. He grew up hating France and dreaming of an independent Corsica. His thinking changed as he got older. As the general of the French army, he conquered most of Italy by 1799. Napoleon made himself emperor of France. He set up the Cisalpine Republic in Italy where he served as king. He had direct control of northern and central Italy. When his only legitimate child (Napoleon François Charles Joseph Bonaparte) was born, he was immediately made King of Rome.
https://www.history.com/news/6-things-you-should-know-about-napoleon
https://www.pbs.org/empires/napoleon/n_myth/youth/page_1.html
https://www.napoleon.org/en/history-of-the-two-empires/articles/how-napoleon-became-king-of-italy/
