CHCL - "Evaluating Picture Books" (p. 84)

Content -
The story is about two children on a nature walk. They ask questions about the things they see. For example, one asks, "are trees the sky's legs?" (page with white sky and trees). These questions are simple enough to understand. There is little text, but it matches with the illustrations. The story takes place outside, showing different areas (the ocean, a forest, rivers, etc.). They both wonder the same things, which can be understood when one says, "I wonder", and the other replies with, "Me too", multiple times in the story. The simplicity and questions make children the target audience.

Illustrations -
The illustrations show why the children are wondering specific things. For example, one asks if the wind is the earth's breath (page with wind gusts). The illustration shows the wind/air, and it also shows the children breathing in the air. With just the question, it may not be clear why they are wondering such a thing. The illustrations help the reader understand and validate what the children ask.

Medium and Style of Illustrations -
The illustrations are presented in a crafty way. Abstract would not be the proper description, but they are almost created in a way that would be similar to that. This style appeals to young children because they are familiar with such illustrations. This style also depicts the nature around them really well, which adds to the effectiveness of the story.

Format -
The cover of the book does a great job of hinting at what the book is going to be about. It shows the two children running on giant rocks at the beach. Not only does this capture the reader's attention, but it also give an idea of what the story is going to be about. This design goes very well with the story and the questions asked throughout it. Each page and in the books adds to the story in one way or another.

Overall Evaluation -
Overall, this story is fit for the targeted audience. It provides a way to allow their imaginations to run wild. There are questions to ponder, places to see, and different things about the world that are highlighted. The use of figurative language to give the world human qualities is the true selling point of this book. The illustrations and text compliment each other extremely well.
