The picture of the Great Dane dog in the backyard relates to the setting because this is the dog that Charlie was supposed to walk every day. Charlie was very intimidated by the dog and the old lady who lived there and owned the dog. For the last few weeks of the school year, him and CJ would walk the dog together and they grew very close.

The lake behind Charlie's grandparents house

This is the lake behind Charlie's grandparents home where he was staying during the summer of 1988. Almost every morning, Charlie and his grandpa would go on a long stroll together and talk about both of their lives.

A basketball court

During the summer, Charlie and his cousin Roxie spend most of their time at the basketball court at the boys and girl club. Charlie learns from Roxie and his passion for basketball grows along with his relationships with his grandparents and Roxie.

The skating rink

Charles, CJ, and Skinny practice every year for the big skating competition. They are one of the best. The next competition is during the summer but Charles is unable to participate because he is spending the summer with his grandparents. He is very disappointed because they had blown the last one and that is something they enjoy doing all together.

I would give this book a 4/5 stars. It was really interesting and written really well. As I was reading I could feel the emotion and the tension happening in certain moments. The only reason it is not a 5 is because at the end, it skips right to his adulthood and is a bit confusing.

The Globetrotters stadium

This is the Globetrotters stadium. The Globetrotters are a comedic basketball team. Here is where Charles was called down to get a signed basketball and his cousin who was a big fan was very jealous. This basketball game was one of the first times that Charles and Roxie got to see each others true personality.

This book you have written is truly amazing. I really liked the style that you chose to write it in. I felt like I was an actual character in the story. It was surprisingly easy to track along with which made it more exciting for me to read. I could always tell who was talking and I am glad you included so much dialogue and so many visionary details.This story of your father's childhood and journey through the worst of times is very inspiring. I think that it was very motivational and every time that I would read a little section of it, I would want to do some sort of "sportsy " activity!

The author believes that resilience will help lead to success. Charlie had just lost his father due to heart issues. It feels like his whole world is falling apart and he is in a VERY tough spot. He is forced to stay with his grandparents and has to adjust to the new lifestyle while still crying himself to sleep many nights. He finds basketball and thinks that it is a waste of time and he is not the best at it. Throughout the whole summer, he is on the court for many hours practicing and practicing. He finds relief in the sport and was distracted from all the pain and chaos that was happening for the past few months. He persevered through the whole summer counting down the days until it was over but when his mom comes, he realizes he doesn't want to leave his grandparents like he had wanted to before. He persevered through his whole childhood and in the end, he builds a wonderful basketball-loving family.

"This year, I turned twelve and he promised to take me to the Appalachians, Charleston, Knoxville, Louisville, to hike, and he promised to get me some fresh sneakers and let me taste beer as long as you don't tell your mother ,Charlie.

But none of that ever happened because at 9:01 p.m. on the ninth of march my star exploded and everything froze." (pg. 16-17)

This is important to the story line because this is when Charlie's world falls apart. (his dad dies) His whole family has to make changes and this is what he struggles with throughout the whole entire book.

This matters in the story line because before Charlie's dad died, he only saw his family once or twice a year and he barely knew all of them. He dreads the summer he had to spend with his grandparents but throughout the summer, he gets to know them better and they get to understand him to. They begin to see each other as true family and build a relationship between each other that fills up Charlie's night sky again after his dad's "star blew up."

Charlie's grandpa sends him straight to work when he arrives without barely saying hello. Charlie has a feeling the summer is going to be worse than he thought.

Charlie, Skinny, and his cousin Ivan get caught while hanging out and they discover that Ivan has drugs. They see the police and run but are caught and put in a cell. Charlie freaks out and his family has to come pick him up and he learns to surround himself with better people.
