This adorable video starts with Sesame Street characters Abby and Elmo, who are on a quest to find what is different and the same. It just so happens that Gordon is reading the perfect book called We’re Different, We’re the Same. It explains that we may look different, but how in everything essential, we are the same.

For example, our skin can be of different colors. But skin does the same job and works the same for everyone, no matter its color. This is a simple way to celebrate diversity and has a beautiful message.

This resource can be played before morning circle to be the start of an important conversation to talk about our differences and similarities and connecting those to how all of us are human and experience things in different ways. This can be done for TK/K/ and First

Three students are immigrants from Guatemala, Korea, and Somalia and have trouble speaking, writing, and sharing ideas in English in their new American Elementary school. Through Self-determination and with encouragement from their peers and teachers, the students learn to feel confident and comfortable in their new school without losing a sense of their home country, language, and identity.

This book could be read during an SEL lesson. After the read, students can create a picture and present something from their culture, an example could be your favorite type of lunch to bring to school or nighttime routines the night before school. Afterwards, the class can have a discussion about new or interesting things they learned about their new friends. This can be for Tk & K.

“So Many Colors, So Many Shapes” has a powerful message that people come in different colors and shapes yet share the same hearts!

The lyrics are simple and repetitive so that your Kinders will pick it up quickly and will sing along. Use this as a brain break or an introduction to the topic of diversity.

Singing Walrus is popular in my classroom because the songs are so fun. We can use this song as a brain break to have some music and movement as a transition activity with a small discussion about the songs meaning for TK & K.

Back to School invites young minds to sit in the front row and share the exciting experience of learning with kids just like themselves all over the world. Whether they take a school bus, a boat, or a rickshaw to get there, kids around the globe are going to school and growing smarter and more curious every day.

This book can be a great topic to discuss. It can help students realize how different other people's lives can be and how different people use various forms of transportation to get to school. It also can teach students about being grateful for what they have. This can be great for TK-First grade students.

Lola and her family prepare for the first day of school the night before, then get up early, take pictures, and head to class. Lola puts her things in her cubby, chooses her activities, reads, plays, and has a snack. Before she knows it, it's times to sing the food-bye song and rush into mommy's arms for a warm reunion. A comforting, cheerful read that demystifies the school day for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

This book can be a Segway to a small discussion about our daily routine and a fun craftivity that involves fine motor skill practice (i.e. ripping small pieces of paper to glue and fill in a pencil outline).

This is a very sweet story with soft, evocative watercolor illustrations that will help kids grow comfortable with the idea of starting preschool. Ming is curious and playful and ready for adventure, but excited to see Ming at the tops of the slide by the story's end.

This story is another great discussion topic about how we feel on the first day of school and what helped us become more comfortable. It is a great starter to introduce watercolor art since the illustrations are that way and to paint about something that we liked about the first day of school. (Tk/K)

A very cute and diverse set of children are seen putting their belongings in their cubbies, playing together, eating lunch and using the potty. They also participate in circle time, story time, sing songs and clean up before laying down for nap time. The sequence of events shown in the book are very similar to the schedule kids follow at school so it is very similar to the reader. A wonderful back-to-school book for preschoolers to help them get acclimated to routines and adjust to school.

This is a great book to start the first day of school where centers will be talked about, routine will be implemented and the classroom will be explored.
