The weather forecast was for clear skies but you can never really predict how it will be on Bleaklow. A heavy bank of cloud covered the moor but as the sun rose at 5am, the low cloud lifted a little. In these conditions, the crash site is quite an ethereal and beautiful place.

Nonetheless my suggestion for anyone intending to visit the aircrash site is to use map and compass / GPS or go with an experienced guide. The notes provided above are an addition to – not instead of – using map and compass and GPS if you have one. And it would, IMO, be very unwise to go armed with just the advice “Please keep to the main stone path for 1.5 miles, then at a large stream turn off left (uphill)”

But I understand the need for something and at least they’d be on the right path; earlier this year (2024) as I was walking back to the Snake Pass layby from Kinder Scout, I met a young man in jeans, trainers and a sweater and holding a plastic carrier bag. He was heading south for Featherbed Moss and asked me if he was on the right path to visit the crash site…

The crash site has changed a bit since my first visit in 2008, though because I visit at least once a year (usually two or three times a year) I only notice the changes when I look at my older photos of the site. Some debris has been stolen by ghoulish souvenir hunters, while other parts have corroded over the passing years or have crumpled under the boots of visitors. Especially since the Covid pandemic, the crash site of ‘Over Exposed!’ has become a regular tourist attraction. Guide books and tourist websites mention it, it’s on Tripadvisor and it’s a place many people want to visit, which is a good thing in my view. It is probably easier to visit now as what were intermittent paths underfoot are now quite clear and easy to follow.

There are lots of reasons why people should not remove artefacts from air crash sites, ethical and legal, plus the landowner forbids it too. I often see bits of debris which people have carried and then dumped, presumably because it was too heavy to carry. It also would look a bit obvious, lifting a big piece of debris – clearly stolen from this site – into the boot of a car or back of a van with other people milling about.

The plateau top experiences unpredictable and harsh weather conditions where cloud cover is frequent and sunshine amounts to no more than 1000 hours a year (these photos were taken on one of the rare sunny days!). The summit is often below the cloud base and it is very easy to get lost. Bring your compass or GPS.

Over 150 mm of rain can fall over a matter of hours, completely saturating the peatlands. This high rainfall is necessary to maintain peat formation in the area (refer to the acrotelm/ catotelm page, or the peat themes page).
