As I grew up, I learned there is so much more wrong with the world than just the way animals are treated. I wanted to do everything I could to help our planet for our generation and future generations, but I wasn’t sure what I could do as a teenager. I watched more videos and read articles on sustainability and how microplastics are destroying our oceans and wildlife. My first step to sustainability was buying stainless straws, then came more and more reusable items from bamboo utensils to reusable snack bags, but this still wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more. 

I started my own jewelry business called Botanic Beads. My whole brand revolves around nature and helping the environment. Percentages of my profit go to different organizations that help our oceans, save the rainforests, or protect endangered animals. Botanic Beads does not only help raise money for the environment, but it helps raise awareness and invoke passion among those who purchase my crochet jewelry. I’ve sold around fifty pieces of jewelry to both people I’m friends with and people I’ve never met. This is only a small way to help encourage and bring change, but I’d like to think every ounce of effort counts. 

Of course, I still felt there was more I could do. I decided to get my community engaged. I found a sponsor at my school to start an environmental club. I have found clean up opportunities, festivals, and small activities for us to participate in. I want to involve my whole school in being eco-friendly. I plan on starting a compost bin in the school cafeteria and making people more aware of what can and cannot be recycled. The slogan for my club is, “nurture our nature”. It has reached the point where if anyone ever has a question about the environment or how they can make a change, they come to me. Knowing that I am making a change for our entire planet, makes me really feel like I’m accomplishing something with my life.  

Someone once asked me during a dinner conversation what I wanted to do with my life to benefit the world. I first said, “I want to become a vet and help the animals,” but she was not happy with this cut and dry answer, so she asked me again. I responded with, “I want to spread my passion and knowledge about the environment and make others want and work for change as much as I do.” A smile spread across her face. I’ve learned that you can’t sit around and wait for change. You have to be the one to stand up and do it yourself. The best thing you can do, is share your interest with the world and encourage them to be better and do better.
