The narrator resists domination of her disability by using her body and her "shouting out". She resists through language and a pride in all of her hidden talents. She knows them well and can articulate them.

Her father speaks mostly, and he uses language to honor and acknowledge the reality of his daughter's disability. It is he who attempts connection. Mother seems to put her daughter at arm's length and, if it was she who chose the pink wheelchair, to "normalize" the narrator's identity.
