What is the purpose of a university?

Should the primary function be utilitarian or enlightenment?
* The value of a degree is important as it creates and enables people to spread knowledge as well as giving young people communication skills, lets them think logically, gives them motivation and sophisticates them. Society views university as a chance to go into highly skilled jobs. The value to the student may matter most as it can give them an insight to what they want to do with their future and something they are proud they have achieved. However it may be more valued to society as people are identified through what they do and their degree is valued as it helps them get a job. I think that the knowledge acquisition by the student also helps create public awareness.
What is the economic impact of tertiary education?
* Universities create an economic impact by welcoming all students, including students from other countries. Universities also bring in money off campus at leisure facilities and bring in visitors. They feel compelled to highlight this economic impact to get more students to study there and give the university a high profile which helps the university as well as the economy to grow. Tertiary education is said to give a big impact on productivity in the workplace although differences in studies makes it hard for people to get certain jobs, which there may not be enough of.
To what extent do universities reinforce the existing socio-economic order?
* University funding promotes social mobility as some people cannot afford to pay tuition fees therefore may not be able to get the jobs they want or high paying jobs due to lack of skill or education. It gives people from different backgrounds an equal opportunity to advance in life. Although some people still may not get in as there are minimum entry requirements they have to achieve therefore not everyone gets the chance to go to university. Glasgow Caledonian University and African Leadership College aim to work together to give people a better opportunity to be able to study and work towards the jobs they want to be a part of.

Is prostitution a problem?

- To what extent does prostitution bolster the hidden economy?
Prostitution may be considered an economic asset as it can help political instability and help women mobilise socially. It can be seen as a problem as prostitutes do not have to pay taxes although other citizens do and they still get to use services i.e health care without contribution. Women bare the financial cost as they are forced to lower their fees due to people's preferences and other people's fees.

- Is prostitution exploitative to women?
Prostitution is exploitative to women as they have to impose riskier sex acts, such as unprotected sex, for more money. This increases the chances of STD's which can affect pregnancy and be passed on at child birth, also exploiting children. Their reputation may change and they may be seen differently in society and if illegal, they risk being caught out and imprisoned. Children may also be exploited but may not know it as they may be intimidated to do so. Migration may exploit prostitutes as migrants can increase prices as they are not used to the cost-of-living yet and can also decrease prices as they are entering markets that may have been previously closed.

- Does the prostitute have the right to choose?
Prostitutes choose to go into this type of work as they are on low incomes and need the money to survive or for other goods. They may do this as a side-job as well as another part-time job. Regulation of sex work means that people should have the choice whether to leave this type of work and not be forced into it, as well as being protected from rape and violence. However this exploits children and condemns human trafficking. Woman choose to give up their time and use their body to make money to fulfill their economic needs. Although people think this is wrong in society as it is not something that is seen as the "norm" and exploits women. It can be seen as culturally wrong as people are having sex outside of marriage, and it can be politically wrong as in many countries prostitution is against the law.
