Throughout the novel, Martel constantly emphasizes the theme of a religious anchor. For Pi, practicing three religions only helped make his faith stronger. As a Catholic school, this is a great opportunity to introduce students to new ways of practicing their faith.

"'He can't be a Hindu, a Christian, and a Muslim. It's impossible. He must choose'" (69). When confronted by his faiths' leaders, they asked him to choose a faith. Although each faith still supports the same main ideas, they were all blind to see Pi's open heart to accept every religion, as God calls us to be open and welcoming to our neighbors. This teaches an important lesson to accept people of all backgrounds, and not force their hand, but rather invite them to explore life worshipping God.

Frustration with Agnostics

"It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while... To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a method of transportation" (28). Pi emphasizes the point of having some religious influence in an individual's life. He claims that atheists only have temporary doubt, but agnostics rather use doubt to lead their lives. With no chance of having a higher inspiration, there is nothing leading a person's life.

After Pi was questioned about his arrival to shore, the doctors were in disbelief, and even tried to refuse the story Pi was telling, by making "factual" claims to disprove minor details, such as a banana's inability to float, which proved to be false. Although it seems unbelievable, Pi claims that his story can still be true. Despite telling another story that entirely falsifies his original story, Pi leaves it up to them to decide which to believe. This mirrors the way that we are all called to willingly choose our religion.

Defending Against Criticism

"'If there's only one nation in the sky, shouldn't all passports be valid for it?'" (74). Pi's argument for being allowed to practice multiple faiths inspires the reader to explore his or her own faith life. The image below symbolizes that although there are an infinite amount of stars, they are all within the same sky. Much like Pi's analogy, the "one nation" and the sky symbolize the true God we are meant to follow, despite our approach.

Perseverance in his Faith

"I saw my suffering for what it was, finite and insignificant... 'My suffering does matter. I want to live! ... how can I not dwell on this brief, cramped view I have of things?'" (177). In the middle of Pi's journey, he calls out to Allah that he wants to be recognized as significant enough to be worthy of life. Pi finds it difficult to see the "light at the end of the tunnel" because of the horrible suffering he is enduring. Still, he prays and trusts that God will provide. As Catholics, we are called to have faith in God that he will save us. Pi's rescue proves that his faith in God helped to save him, as God acted as that light and hope for Pi to keep trying to live.

This image of Jesus carrying his cross to Calvary depicts the suffering he went through. Pi also suffers in his journey to what he thinks is his death. Thankfully, Pi is rescued, but the religious symbolism is still present. This book teaches us that we must live like Jesus and persevere through our suffering in hopes for God to save us.
