During Talk Money Week, the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) encourages the UK to talk money and to celebrate the work done by thousands of organisations to build financial wellbeing for all.  For those working to improve children and young people’s financial education, the week is a great opportunity to highlight the valuable work you do to build strong financial foundations for the next generation. 

Get involved

We’re asking stakeholders, partners, organisations and businesses all over the UK to encourage their own audiences to do one thing to help improve the financial wellbeing of themselves or others – and to make a noise about it so that others are inspired to do the same.

It could be as simple as talking to a child or young person you work with about money, promoting your financial education programmes, or encouraging your employees to use one of the free MoneyHelper tools or calculators. You could mark the week by delivering a money workshop to a school or youth group, hosting an event or sharing new research. All that matters is that we get people talking about money.

The Talk Money Week Participation Pack will be published shortly, with lots of ideas and branded resources to help you get involved. Please do keep us posted on your plans by emailing cyp@maps.org.uk.

We’ll also have an updated Talk Money Toolkit for Schools with ideas and resources to help educators do one thing to help their pupils talk money. We’ll let you know when it is available to download, and we hope you can share the resource among your networks.

The two brand new modules, designed in partnership with Causeway Education, will support you to equip parents to have effective career conversations with their children.

Module 1 is aimed at Careers Leaders who are new to role or looking to understand more about how you can engage parents in careers education.

If you are a more experienced Careers Leader, one that is already engaging students’ families through your work, or an Education Leader with responsibility for careers education in your school, special school or college, you may benefit from the training included in Module 2.

Module 2 builds on the learning by exploring how creating an institution-wide approach to careers through strategic planning can have a deeper impact on learners and their parents.

The highly anticipated Best 100 Apprenticeship Employers and Best 50 Training Providers tables from RateMyApprenticeship have been announced

So far, the ICAEW Maths resources have been used by over 1500 schools throughout the UK. Career advisors and teachers have consistently provided positive feedback on them.

The latest resources centre around topical issues in personal finance and economics by touching on themes such as inflation, cost of living trends, and interest rates.

As with existing ICAEW Maths resources, the new content is directly linked to the GCSE Maths curriculum and covers topics such as algebra, ratios and percentages, statistics, and probability.

ICAEW Maths is focused on bringing GCSE Maths topics to life through exploring real-world contexts that matter to pupils.

The ICAEW Maths resources are free to download, and teachers can access them at www.icaew.com/icaewmaths

The resources and lesson plans are available to teachers working in state-funded secondary schools, teaching 11 to 14 year olds. Career leaders and Heads can register for the school to get sent resources and materials.

We’re well aware that Careers Education moves very quickly and a lot can happen and change over the course of just 1 academic year. Therefore, we’re keen to ensure Careers Leaders are given the opportunity to have access to, learn about and discuss the most recent and up to date information.

In partnership with the CDI, we have launched a short, two-module course which will provide CLs with a complete top-up of all the most essential careers education developments since they last trained. Day 1 focusses on the operational elements of the role, with Day 2 exploring the strategic side.

The course is completely fully-funded and no cost to the school, college or the CL and the institution will receive a £500 bursary upon completion. It is an online course and led by expert tutors at the CDI.

The course is open to anyone who has had some form of Careers Leadership training pre-2020, whether CEC-funded or not.

Since 2010, the Aerozone has hosted over 30,000 students, giving an exclusive insight into airport operations. Our new Aerozone is currently being developed and is scheduled to open at the end of January 2024. The new premises, still on the airport site, are just a short walk from the Terminal. We are now giving local schools priority access to the booking system, before opening the diary to schools further afield.

The Aerozone provides students with a unique, hands-on experience to help them learn more about the airport as well as helping schools to achieve learning objectives including Gatsby Benchmarks 4, 5 and 6 for Secondary schools and the Career Development Framework for Primary schools. Our aim is to link school subjects to the world of work, raise aspirations and broaden horizons by opening children’s eyes to the multitude of jobs in the sector, and providing career insights and networking opportunities with our colleagues.

Our new Aerozone with its interactive role-play areas, will have a number of new activities and resources using digital technology to bring the airport to life, including a new flight simulator. We can also arrange a talk from a colleague guest speaker who can share their knowledge and expertise. Guest speakers have previously included: airline crew, police and fire fighters, airfield operations, customer services, security, border force, the sustainability team and more. A self-led tour of landside areas of the terminal can also be included in your visit.

Once booked, the Aerozone is yours for the day. As the education manager, I will create a bespoke learning experience, ensuring that your visit supports your teaching and learning in school. I will be available on the day itself to provide a welcome, answer student’s questions, and guide you through your itinerary. I can also provide a range of free resources to enhance the learning in school before and/or after your visit. Popular topics for visits include careers, STEM subjects, customer service, business studies, history of flight, people who help us, but visits can be adapted to support almost any subject.

The Aerozone occupies the ground floor of an airport building used by other businesses. It has a secure car park and space for coaches to drop off/pick-up visitors. Students and staff are welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat in the Aerozone. I will also provide you with a risk assessment and other useful documents in advance of your visit, meaning all you need to do is arrange your transport and bring your lunch!

The Aerozone will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 2pm. You can access the booking form (above). Please select the relevant service in order to bring up all the dates available showing in bold. Then select the time available in order to complete the booking form.

The Insight Webinar provides an introduction to Baker McKenzie and their new Social Mobility Programme for year 12 students:Beginnings at Baker McKenzie. The programme supports a selected 20 students throughout year 12 and year 13 by providing regular, engaging events including skills sessions, networking opportunities, mentorship, and a summer work experience placement. The aim of the programme is to provide the students with the skills they need to become future trainees of Baker McKenzie. More information about the programme can be found here.

3. UCAS Tariff Points for Apprenticeships: For the 2026 cycle, UCAS are introducing a new Tariff points structure that now includes Level 3 apprenticeships alongside A-levels, T Levels, and other post-16 qualifications. These changes aim to support apprentices' progression to higher education by creating a unified system that helps universities and colleges evaluate apprenticeship qualifications against traditional academic routes. The maritime sector brings together the shipping, ports, business services, engineering and leisure marine industries and is a significant contributor to the UK’s economy supporting over 1 million jobs, with multiple career pathways available to young people including apprenticeships or university qualifications.  

From working at sea or in a port, to working in the City of London, to cleaning the oceans of plastics or designing a superyacht, maritime is big business. Working in maritime is exciting, rewarding and unlike any other industry. 

Despite its wealth of exciting roles and future growth, the sector does not have the strong awareness amongst schools and young people that it should. We’re delighted to have partnered up with Maritime UK to help change this.

The curriculum helps students make informed financial decisions, manage financial risks, and prepare for the world of work. It includes interactive activities, engaging videos, case studies, quizzes, and supporting teacher resources like FAQs and glossaries to ensure confident delivery for teachers of all backgrounds, including careers leads. Hosting a tour provides the best experience for classrooms, allowing teachers to run their own tour and enable students to compete against their classmates as they explore the technology and careers of the future. Choose either a tour for primary or secondary students.

The NHS faces a significant workforce challenge, with over 100,000 vacancies and a projected shortfall of 360,000 staff by 2036.

Despite this, the health sector remains one of the most popular career interests among young people. So why aren’t more of them entering the sector? 

Examining the Skills Gap, is authored by The Health Sector Advisory Group in partnership with The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC), comprising of 13 NHS employers who oversee a workforce of over 200,000 people.   

This group of ambitious employers, from across the country, are working in partnership with CEC and local Careers Hubs to find long-term solutions to the skills and workforce pressures they face.  

The report identifies barriers young people face, including limited awareness of roles, inconsistent access to quality work experience, and insufficient tailored careers advice. 

It also highlights effective local initiatives such as immersive work experiences, curriculum-integrated careers education, and teacher encounters that are making a difference. 

This report offers evidence-based insights and practical recommendations to strengthen pathways into health sector careers.

Young people develop technical knowledge and life skills whilst broadening understanding of STEM education and career pathways. Teachers receive training, resources and industry support.

Findings are based on a national dataset of 4,863 state-funded mainstream schools, special schools, alternative provision and colleges (94% of secondary institutions), including 75 independent special schools with Section 41 funding. With reporting at its highest ever level, the dataset provides a robust national picture of careers education. This insight briefing highlights key trends and where there has been notable change over the last ten years.  

From September 2025, schools and colleges will begin working towards the updated Gatsby Benchmarks. The refreshed framework, which has a stronger focus on inclusion, leadership, use of data and parental engagement, has been revised to ensure careers education continues to evolve and deliver impact for every young person.

Enter your students into this nationwide cyber security competition for 11-14 year olds. Cyber Explorers, an initiative led by the UK Government, is a free learning programme that teaches cyber security skills to 11-14 year olds, and introduces them to careers in the field.

The competition is free, online, and open to all UK schools and home schools.

About the competition

Your students will join the Cyber Squad on a mission to save Cyber City’s brand-new Smart Mall, where its advanced AI system, SAM-U.L, has malfunctioned and caused the Mall to shut.

Teams will race against the clock to solve cyber puzzles, restore the AI, and reopen the mall - with the fastest, most accurate team in each nation titled Cyber Explorers Cup Champions.

Prizes

Winning teams from each nation will receive tech vouchers for their school to purchase IT equipment (?2,000 worth for winning schools and ?1,000 worth for home schools).

Winning schools from each nation will also enjoy an exclusive Cyber Explorers assembly delivered at their school, introducing whole year groups to key cyber security essentials after the competition.

Pupils receive £5 to create and run their own microbusiness, gaining hands-on experience in planning, budgeting, marketing and selling.   Schools can win up to £1,000 through competitions running across the four weeks. 

Teachers are supported with flexible and free, ready-to-use downloadable resources that link across the curriculum. The challenge is Skills Builder Level 3 accredited.

As such, our events cover curriculum and sector-based areas such as: languages and STEM, languages and marketing/business, languages and tourism, languages and science communication, languages and journalism, languages and the intelligence services. We also work closely with the RAF, helping them to promote the trade of RAF linguist, and have co-created three events with them to explore the international nature of their work.

The application of employability skills is a key component of all our events which require students to demonstrate key soft skills such as teamwork, time-management, communication, organisation and leadership.

By taking part, students have the invaluable opportunity of practising their languages outside of the classroom within a fun, interactive work-based scenario. All events take the form of a competition between teams with prizes for winners, runners-up and individual merit.

These one-day events are designed to help more girls explore engineering, electronics, and technology pathways through hands-on experiences and direct engagement with universities and industry.
Students will:

• Take part in a hands-on Arduino microcontroller workshop

• Hear from women working in engineering and technology

• Learn about careers in electronics and semiconductors

• Visit university engineering departments and facilities

• Meet current university students

• Experience a sample university lecture

Asda Heroes - aimed at primary school's or APs in England. This will be delivered through a virtual platform, all who meet the target cohort are free to sign up. 

Launch to staff leads will take place on Wednesday 23rd September, 3:30pm - 4:30pm.

Asda Leaders - aimed at Year 10 or Year 12 pupils (Secondary schools, Sixth Forms or Colleges). This will be delivered through a virtual platform with mentors to support the development of the team's business plan. There are no restrictions or costs on numbers providing the target cohort criteria is met.

The programme aligns to GCSE National Curriculum frameworks particularly within Business and Product Development faculties.

Launch for teams & staff will take place virtually on Wednesday 14th October, 10:30am - 11:30am.

Developed by careers education specialists and aligned to Gatsby Benchmarks, it provides a clear, progressive journey that builds students’ confidence, knowledge, and decision-making skills.

The Destinations programme will help teachers, advisers and careers leaders to:

• Reduce planning time with ready-to-deliver lesson plans and activities.

• Deliver a consistent, high-quality careers programme.

• Support students to make informed, confident decisions about their future.
