The annotation helps readers understand the emotions and setting. The author uses various elements throughout the excerpt. For example the excerpt states "travelled that very road in a coach." This setting gives the reader an image in their head of the time period the story was set in. I gathered lots of info from just this background info that was given. The author uses lots of imagery and atmospheric details. In the passage she also states a metaphor by using mountains to show her obstacles in life and describes how she'll overcome them. This contributes to the story by giving the reader tiny but, important pieces of information that can be used. The elements could not only help the reader but, could help the author as well as coming up with more plots.

Ariana Paredes

In the excerpt, the gothic elements, global issues, literary terms, and areas of exploration helped me understand the characters emotion because throughout the passage the narrator gave bits and pieces of the character's feelings, along with her identity. The narrator revealing her identity shows the type of person she is and what she yearns for. As the identity was being revealed, so did the global issues of abuse, neglectance, and mental illness. The narrator also describes what the character sees around her, how she feels and gives that imagery to visualize and picture it, which gives into the state of how she's living. The character has spent her summers at school, has no contact with the outside world, and is isolated away. This feeling of isolation and loneliness transpires her transformation, and at the end intense emotion comes over her as she derails because she no longer wants to be in this same routine of life and is desperate for her own liberty.

Hunter Hay

The global issues of gender and family can be applied. This is because women in the 19th century had very few rights. Also, the narrator says that she has had no contact with her family, which also falls under the common gothic element of isolation. Jane Eyre is an example of a Bildungsroman novel because it deals with the narrator's formative years. The IB concept of Perspective can be applied as it is told from the perspective of the narrator, who in the excerpt is a young girl who feels trapped at school due to never seeing her family.

Amelia Rian

In the excerpt of "Jane Eyre", there are a multitude of different elements used to display the feelings and provide a deeper connection to Jane and the narrator. Literary terms like personification and imagery are used, along with the global issue of isolation and mental decline. Using the literary element of symbolism, the school is described as a "prison ground." This shows Jane's feelings for the school and desire to leave. Liberty is represented by the wind and open spaces beyond lowood. Personification is also used in the line "seemed to scatter on the wind." This does not mean the wind can physically scatter her prayers and desires, but it shows that Janes longing for freedom seems to increase day by day. The global issue of Janes isolation can also be used to represent real-world problems, such as the lack of power that women had over their lives. Overall many literary elements are used to show the narrator's and Jane's perspective on a deeper level.

Through IB concepts it represents how the girl thinks and really feels about her life, showing her identity as curious. A gothic novel element reveals how the area she is in is gloomy and mysterious which allows us to picture the setting in our head. Literary elements such as metaphors help us reveal parts of the story. When she states "an age seemed to have elapsed" hints how long ago this incident was. All of these elements help bring together the main focus and gloomy setting that the reader can connect to.

In the excerpt the narrator uses the literacy terms in the excerpt through a metaphor and describes how she is longing or gasping for liberty and freedom. This shows that the character is feeling stuck. The excerpt also uses the IB concept of Identity to show how the narrator is curious and longs to know more about the world around her. The narrator also uses gothic novel elements to show how the atmosphere is gloomy and isolated, this represents how the character is upset the her situation.

Lauren Camann

In the passage, the main character is Jane Eyre. She talks throughout about how she feels about her life, but she does bring up her past. She often feels isolated in her life. She plays a big role in education, which leads to her beliefs and values. It seems like she looked back at her life and realized that she put so much time and effort into education, that she did not do what she used to do when she was younger. Which could be that her beliefs and values had changed since then. When she was younger, she would go out, and explore, but now she doesn't even travel during her vacations. She compared where she was to a prison which gives it a gloomy mood when you imagine a prison. But she also uses imagery to describe the landscape when she talks about the "hilly horizon".

I learned a lot about who Jane Eyre was by going through this excerpt and identifying many literary terms, gothic novel elements, global issues, and IB concepts. Jane uses a lot of imagery to express her feelings of isolation and longing for freedom. She also uses metaphors to express her struggle of finding her identity. Furthermore she uses gothic novel elements to show the mood and a dark, gloomy and maybe even scary.

     Ben Julich

In this excerpt from Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte utilizes a myriad of literary devices such as imagery and metaphors. Early in the passage, she uses imagery by describing the "hilly horizon", "blue peaks", and "white road". One of the metaphors Bronte uses in this excerpt is when she describes the "boundary of rock and heath" being her prison-ground which could be seen as gothic. It paints a gloomy atmosphere and it connects with us to show us how isolated Jane is. Other examples of isolation are when Jane describes her lack of available communication with society, and when she says she longs to leave Lowood. When she tells us how she wants to leave Lowood we get a glimpse of her curious and even adventurous nature. One Area of Exploration Bronte uses is when Jane remembers travelling down the road to Lowood in a coach which is an example of Time and Space.

Parker Wahl

In this excerpt from the book, Jane is describing her experience at her school and the way she describes it gives off feelings of loneliness and neglect. She states "...the blue peaks; it was those I longed to surmount;..." This can show the Gothic Novel Element of isolation because it can be interpreted as she wants to leave the school and climb over the mountains to see more liveliness. Later in the paragraph she says "I had had no communication by letter or message with the outer world:..." This can be a Global Issue of neglect and also a Gothic Novel Element of isolation because it can be seen as her family does not want to communicate with her and it seems she talks to nobody. Lastly, she says "... for liberty I uttered a prayer; it seemed scattered on the wind..." This can show a Global Issue of religion because of prayer, but it can be seen as praying out to anybody that can hear as a last hope, as she has nobody for her.

The excerpt of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte shows both representation and transformation. At the beginning, she mentions the beauty of the outside world from indoors, which represents isolation (global issue). After being isolated for eight years, she urges for a change which may slowly cause her mental decline. I believe that the road she wants to follow further not only shows identity, but also represents the path she wants to take in life. She uses literary elements, such as imagery and alliteration, to highlight these dreams of hers. She uses the gothic novel element of atmosphere to explain her current situation, like a "prison ground," to emphasize her need for change.

She also used Gothic novel elements to describe more of the setting like the atmosphere. These elements and terms are very useful and beneficial to help the reader understand the setting of the excerpt. Bronte was able to give us some details about the main character Jane Eyre. She used the IB concept of identity to show her personality and how she feels. There are a few examples of when she used Identity but I'm not going to put them in this prompt. The main idea is that she used all of these concepts, elements, terms, and issues to help us understand the story.

Everything is summarized into one key factor that is being distributed throughout the book. The character, Jane Eyre, is going through many mental blockages because shes been stuck in the same reality for eight years and she is tired of everything. The area where Jane is staying, its described in a very gloomy tone, as if shes been stuck in the place like a person is stuck in a prison.

In "Jane Eyre", we see the use of many different literary elements, IB concepts, Global Issues, and Gothic Novel Elements. All of these were key in understanding the character of the excerpt. Charlotte Bronte uses the Global issues of neglect and mental decline to show how it greatly affects Jane Eyre's thought process and her beliefs in the idea of freedom and liberty. She also shows the Gothic Novel Elements of Isolation and a Gloomy atmosphere to give her this environment where she is in a cycle that Jane can't get out of. Bronte also uses imagery and personification when she talks about the "hilly horizon" and liberty. Jane also displays the IB concept of identity when she was "tired of the routine of eight years in one afternoon" which shows that she is trying to discover her true self and not the one that goes to school and does nothing. This shows how she has been trying to get out of this cycle of suffering in school.

One of the literary element I found was imagery in the beginning which says '' I went to the window, opened it, and looked out.'' Made me believe she is in a room. Also, her saying it seemed like a prison ground added onto my idea of her just wanting freedom and she doesn't wanna be isolated and alone. She also adds on that she didn't have communication through letters or messages so she isn't able to talk to others in the outside world.

The author is telling us that the character felt trapped in a continuous loop of having the same routine. The character in the story seems to pass through habits for eight years without having a break. The character wishes to be set free and after being hopeless they decide to abandon their way of pursuing such thing and "framed a humble supplication" it seems to me that the character wishes there was more to their daily routine than being in the same atmosphere they've been in for eight years the author used many words to describe what surrounds the characters way of feeling which is what concluded to knowing what the characters reality is.

Esteban Gonzalez-Torres

In this excerpt of "Jane Eyre'' there's a lot of metaphors and areas of exploration. These two can match and help each other. 'Charlotte Bronte' (the writer of this excerpt) shows that IB concept-like identity and how she sees things through her own eyes. Also the gothic novel element describes the place she is in but also how she feels in some sort of way. Also where it says ,"all within the boundaries of rock" and ," prison ground exile." shows us that she combined gothic novel elements and area of exploration. Charlotte also used literacy elements such as imagery to set a place where she was at. She also used communication as in she needs to speak out because her voice was trapped.

Hailey Frank

In "Jane Eyre", there are multiple literary elements, gothic novel elements, global issues, IB concepts, and areas of exploration that help understand the character/narrator. Charlotte Brontë used imagery, atmosphere, and the environment to develop the narrator's identity and mental being. She used the character's imagination and identity to show their feelings and how they interact with the world. Charlotte Brontë shows how dealing with being isolated made the narrator become a damsel in distress and made her mental health decline.

Literary elements: Charlotte Brontë uses alliteration, imagery, and repetition to explain the setting, as well as show the time period.

Gothic novel elements: Brontë uses atmosphere, isolation, and damsel in distress to show how the narrator is feeling in the excerpt.

Global issues: The global issues of mental decline and isolation show how being stuck in a mundane life affected the narrators mental health.

IB Concepts: Brontë uses the IB concept of identity multiple times to show how the narrator feels in her situation and how she remembers getting there.

Areas of Exploration: Brontë uses the environment, imagination, and education to show how living as a woman who can only learn is affected.
