Modern medicine and colonization allowed ones to travel to Africa, when they couldn't before due to sickness. When England came they found diamonds. And in finding diamonds, sparked interest among other European countries. The Zulu Nations tried to fight against the English but ultimately lost and brought about the Berlin Conference. The Berlin Conference was a gathering of European countries interested in the natural materials, these countries came together so as to cause less conflict with each other, not caring about the African people. Even after the Berlin Conference was over, this way of imperialistic thinking caused the European nations to continue to encroach upon several more African nations as they only saw these nations as a way to gain power, spread religious ideologies and receive more resources.

(notes)

England was in control of the Indian Spice Trade and traded with China. England used drugs like opium, to open further trade the Qing China, eventually the drugs destroyed their stability. A significant portion of the population became addicted to opium, foreign merchants conducted unregulated trade and the spread of Christianity all caused the Chinese people to lose faith in their government. The people believed they couldn't protect their country from foreign powers. That resulted in the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.

Materials such as silk and tea drove England to trade with China. However, China had no interest in anything the English had because it was all manufactured and they just wanted silver in exchange. But because of trade with other countries, that made giving China silver for payment was difficult. Opium was used in little quantities and only for medicinal reasons, the English used their opium, which was stronger, to trade and the people began to use it. The Chinese government became aware and banned the use of it, causing the opium wars in which the English won then, forcing China to sign treaties for trade.
